#Aristolochia
I found out that they feed on all members of the genus Aristolochia! A common name for that genus of vines is “Dutchman’s pipe” vines as the blooms sorta look like very fancy pipes!

Not the best shot but here is the front. If you search on pelican flower you could find better images. Also they do look similar to the pitcher plant.

I’m in the Sacramento area, 9b. But I understand there are related species throughout North America… this one is California Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia californica)

Aristolochia grandiflora- produces large and some of the most bizarre-looking flowers on Earth. It looks like a resting bird or a strange, prehistoric lung. Photographed in Monte Verde Costa Rica 2019.

This is California Dutchman’s Pipevine (Aristolochia californica). I’m not sure where it will grow, but I know it also has relatives that grow elsewhere. Good luck!

Where are you?
January 31, 2026 at 2:35 AM
Yes, Aristolochia californica, probably a relative.

Six years ago yesterday 🌿

Aristolochia littoralis, the nonnative Calico Flower or Dutchman's Pipe, blooming in a tree at Waihe'e Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge. Climbed fifteen feet up a decaying Acacia tree, complete with thorns, to photograph, good times 😎

They are quite wonderful, yes. Northern California, not an orchid but California Dutchman’s pipevine (Aristolochia californica)

Ours is Aristolochia californica

Oh interesting plant. And confusing! There are over 500 species and you want to match the correct one to your locality - the local native species (aristolochia californica for instance) not one that is desirable and native elsewhere but might become invasive. Very cool vine!

It appears to be a relative of the plant Uma-no-suzukusausa (horse bell grass) in Japan.
This plant is also a favorite of the larvae of the Chinese swallowtail butterfly.

Posts like this are a much needed refreshment. AND provide me with an opportunity to ask and learn 😃.
a) What pollinates them?
b) Are they an Aristolochia?
