The queen must not acquire many aphids for herself. When she has taken the throne of her kingdom, she shall write for herself a copy of this law on a scroll in the presence of the Leviticants
If human Judaism is a collective enterprise, how much more so would myrmecological Judaism be? An individual ant might struggle to get through a page of Talmud in its life, but I bet the colony could handle daf yomi
Oh now that’s an interesting question.

If ants could study Talmud, what would their obligation to study be?

My supervillain origin story: I see one more screen shot of the Black Knight satellite conspiracy, have a meltdown, and turn into a were-mammoth who bursts through walls like the Kool-Aid man, kidnaps people, and makes them go on hikes where I show them skunk cabbages and woolly alder aphids.

Roses are red
And full of blackspot
And covered in aphids
And thorns stick in you and make you bleed and you can then rub the blood on your face.

Roll on May 15th, St. Dymphna's day, much better saint.

Ladybirds where I come from and they are friends to the gardener, eating aphids by the hundreds if not thousands.

Do Magnolia eating beetles make a kind of honey?
Or honeydew? Like aphids?
Thanks! Magnolia should bloom soon in Vancouver BC!🌻🌸🪷 🌸
Cherry blossom time.

Well they normally eat aphids, so I presume that bacon is more obliging by not trying to fly away. Also its possibly nice to have a more varied diet*

They had been eating the tiny bugs that arrived on the Waitrose potted herbs.

Truly, if you're gardening to save money, you have to be so vigilant. Crops can fail for so many reasons, not just weather - shit seed germination, pests (hi, aphids, no clue why the ladybugs aren't eating you, could you leave my brassicas alone ... oh great now there's cabbage moths).

yknow, bug based gross-out/rot horror doesn't hit me as hard since marrying a bug girl

Roaches and aphids crawling out of her mouth and swarming everywhere? Yeah the baggies of feeders get torn like that sometimes, one of the lizards will handle it, it's whatev

What are the birds eating in the roses? A yearly question answered by the follow up:

Where have all the aphids gone ?

Oleander aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Aphis nerii) were introduced to North America alongside oleander (Apocynaceae: Nerium oleander). They will also feed on other members of this plant family, including the swamp milkweed shown (Apocynaceae: Asclepias incarnata). Blissfield Michigan, 23 Oct 2011.

Put out two Ladybug homes. I need to keep the area moist so they visit, multiply and stay. Natural way to keep plants from being bothered by unhealthy bug eaters. 🙂

Instead of using chemicals, attract beneficial insects like hoverflies to keep aphids and whiteflies in check. Nectar-rich planting, wildflowers and areas of long grass will bring beneficial insects into your garden.

I know diluted milk works on powdery mildew. I'm interested to see if it works for aphids, too.
February 2, 2026 at 5:01 AM
I forget who posted about doing diluted milk for aphids but my fleur de amour are 7ft tall and in the fish room and having a bad attack. I sprayed them till they were dripping today and will update with the results.

I pruned the massively overgrown Lisbon lemon & apart from discovering scale, gall wasps & (I think) wooly aphids 🤬 I found this pretty critter: a Dainty Swallowtail.
