[Nature.com]Ecology and spread of the North American H5N1 epizootic - Nature The panzootic of highly pathogenic H5N1 since 2021 was driven by around nine introductions into the Atlantic and Pacific flyways, followed by rapid dissemination through wild migratory birds, primarily Anseriformes.

Dispersal occurred rapidly westward between adjacent flyways, with transmission most well supported in Anseriformes, suggesting that these species are good targets for surveillance. We also compare transmission in wild and domestic birds, and show that the 2022 panzootic was fundamentally different

Canada Geese lift into the wind, a shifting pattern across a grey sky. The moment feels both heavy and weightless at once.

I'd like to share my #Wingspan Taxonomy Expansion! I've been working on this for about four years trying to get this working well and I'm happy to release it into the world.

The expansion centers around the Field Science game mode and a deck of Taxonomy cards.

Bird species–AIV subtype bipartite network (9,964 records). 23 hub species (Anseriformes + Charadriiformes) = key roles in AIV transmission = strong flight ability, longer time foraging on water surfaces, greater longevity, higher diversification rates

Anatidae

Les Anatidae (ou Anatidés) constituent la plus importante famille de l'ordre des Anseriformes. Elle comprend les oies, les cygnes, les canards
=> notre palmi-president serait apparenté aux oies !!!

Duck of the Day #3

Horned Screamer
Anhima cornuta

Doesn't look like a duck? Fair. And yet, South American screamers are the earliest branching Anseriformes. They're semiaquatic and have a number of duck-like traits -- though the rod-like "horn" of collagen in the horned screamer isn't one of them!

Abundant throughout much of North America, Canada Geese (Anseriformes: Anatidae: Branta canadensis) are often encountered near water. In the spring they’re commonly seen in family groups, with vulnerable goslings sticking close to their protective parents. Zaleski State Forest, Ohio, 02 May 2014.

(i) circulation in Anseriformes and Charadriiformes;
(ii) ability to infect many hosts, including mammals;
(iii) persistence across seasons and wide geographic spread. 4/12
