Book extract SlenderWolf Conflicts and Alliances Chapter 18 The Battle of Puffin Island There are a few inconsequential cumulus clouds dotted about the sky on this pleasant Tuesday afternoon. A light breeze means that the swell is calm and mellow. The crew of The Frabjous Joy are relaxed, cruising at a gentle pace, and they’re enjoying a well earned rest at this mid point between Amlwch and Conwy. Frenzied activity ensues aboard the larger and faster Frumious Bandersnatch as the pirates’ adrenalin starts pumping. The raiding party readies the grappling hooks and ropes, the clamber netting and the long gisarmes. In silence, BlackCloud watches from his vantage point on the poop deck. BlackDog, one hand holding the starboard caprail amidships, leans seaward, and frantically waves his free hand urging the helmsman to bring the ship closer to the line of The Frabjous Joy. When the right moment comes the deckhands are ready to hoist the sails, lowering the speed. When the two ships come along side, the raiding party will have a few seconds to board, before the momentum takes the pirate ship ahead. A watercolour painting of a pirate Captain. Photograph shows the rocky coastline of Amlwch with East Mouse Island offshore. This island is the site of the wreck of the SS Dakota, built in 1874, which struck the island and sank on 9 May 1877. The 4,332 ton ship broke into three pieces but all 218 souls on board were saved.

Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Winefride (Welsh: Mair, Seren Y Mor a Santes Wenfrewi) is a Roman Catholic church in Amlwch, Anglesey. It was built in the 1930s to a design by an Italian architect, Giuseppe Rinvolucri, using reinforced concrete. The church is loosely in the shape of an upturned boat, possibly reflecting Amlwch's maritime heritage. The glass inserts over the roof provide internal illumination

Amlwch is a small coastal town on the north side of Anglesey in Wales. Amlwch is a port town and has a beach at Llaneilian and some significant coastal cliffs.

My office for today: the National Archives Kew. I will be looking at documents related to Giuseppe Rinvolucri, the Italian architect who designed the Catholic church in Amlwch. Can't wait to see what I find!
