Pokémon Behavioral Research Department, 151 Giovanni Avenue, Saffron City, Kanto 65536 Abstract It is well-understood that pokémon differ in various properties that affect their aptitude in battle. These properties include typing, abilities, and base stats, all of which may influence a pokémon’s damage output, resilience to incoming attacks, and other attributes such as turn order. These properties vary between pokémon in a variety of ways, including both within-species and between-species contributions. Pokémon are also known to display individual differences in aspects beyond the scope of battling, such as their physical size and color patterning. Recently, Moonstone et al. (2024) illustrated within-species variation in stored bladder volume at which a pokémon feels the desire to void, a result with significant implications on best-practice recommendations for pokémon care. However, these results were restricted to Umbreon as a model-species. It has been considered likely that in addition to individual-level differences, there also exist species-level differences to the Threshold of Discomfort (ToD), but to date there has been no study that controls for individual differences. In addition, it is unclear if differences in the ToD translate into differences in overall Ability to Delay Urination (ADU), which itself has unique implications for pokémon care. Here, we show in a controlled study that there indeed exist species-level differences in both the ToD and ADU. We reproduce the results of Moonstone et al. and also find within-species variance in urinary delay ability, which we measure by proxy as the time taken for a pokémon to outwardly show physical signs of discomfort due to bladder fullness.
