The tomb of Eadgyth, known as Editha in German, queen consort of Otto I (his tomb isn't open to the public at the moment). She was the grandaughter of Alfred the Great and half-sister to King Athelstan. 🏺 #medievalsky

Looking up the precise location of the site producing the Anglo-Saxon pottery I have been asked to look at in the ROM. North Elmham was apparently the seat of a bishopric until 1071, and the excavations were to the southwest of the now ruined cathedral. 🏺 #MedievalSky

Another plate from my copy of John O. Westwood’s Facsimiles of Anglo-Saxon & Irish Manuscripts (1868), this one from the mid-8th century Stockholm Codex Aureus, created in Southumbria in present day England. Westwood made his “facsimiles” by painting copies of the originals. #booksky #medievalsky

Reading deeply about animals for the chapter I hope to finish this semester, thinking about how they created early medieval landscapes with their communities.

What are folks favorite articles/chapters/books on horses, pigs, cows, sheep or goats? Any period or field!

On 15 June 2015 the museum was hit repeatedly by Russian airstrikes or behalf of the Assad regime.

Here is a #ThrowbackThursday pic of me in the field at Deir Mar Musa, Syria, in 2006. I was surveying the area for the caves in which the monks of the monastery lived. This is actually a very nice one with a patio. The stick was because I had recently broken my foot.

At the monastery of Deir Mar Musa, Syria, the main buildings are on top of a cliff, & the medieval monks lived in caves spread around the landscape, some of which seemed difficult to access. So in 2006 I took two climbers out with me. I don't like heights.
