Repeatedly regaining the lead following assorted mechanical issues, Rodríguez drove nearly all of the laps at the 1000km race held at the Österreichring in the early summer of 1971. Fellow drivers and his team manager said it was possibly his most spectacular race.

Born #OnThisDay in 1937, Vittorio Brambilla's single F1 victory came at a rain-soaked Österreichring in 1975, Brambilla spinning & hitting the barrier as he crossed the line! He passed away on 26 May 2001.

#HappyBirthday to Tim Schenken, 82 today.

British F3 champion in 1968, Schenken started 34 Grand Prix between 1970-1974, finishing 3rd at the Österreichring in 1971. In sports cars, he won the 1972 1000km Buenos Aires, and 1000km Nürburgring.

F1 returns to Austria after a 10-year absence.

With the Österreichring rebuilt, shortened & renamed the A1-Ring, Jacques Villeneuve (Williams-Renault) won the Austrian Grand Prix from David Coulthard (McLaren-Mercedes) & Heinz-Harald Frentzen in the other Williams.

Italian F3 runner-up in 1974 & 1975, Pesenti-Rossi was 2nd at Enna & 3rd at Vallelunga during the 1975 European F2 championship. He drove a privateer Tyrrell 007 in 3 Grand Prix during 1976, finishing 11th at the Österreichring.

It felt at the time it (Keke winning) would never happen. Could/should have won at Zolder, Brands Hatch, Osterreichring. When you're a 12 year old a #F1 summer seems to last forever.

The Brabham-BMW-BT50s of Nelson Piquet & Riccardo Patrese finished 4th & 5th. Österreichring winner Elio de Angelis brought his Lotus-Ford-91 home in 6th place, having started 15th.

Having narrowly lost to Elio de Angelis at the Österreichring 2 weeks earlier, Keke Rosberg (Williams) went one better, claiming a maiden World Championship race win at the Swiss GP, held at Dijon-Prenois in France. Long-time leader Alain Prost (Renault) was 2nd.

I was excited about this column as I was there. Today I am in a reflective mood.
In 2023 I almost got to the GP but it fell through.
I’m actually glad now. Best to remember Zandvoort as it was just as I don’t think I’d enjoy the Red Bull Ring after the Osterreichring.
