Lots of insights here, including:
1. 350k Russian soldiers KIA, more than any post-WWII war
2. Russia advancing only 15-70 *meters* a day during major offensives
3. Payouts for soldier deaths concentrated mostly in the poorest regions like Tuva (25x more likely to die than soldier from Moscow)
Russian army casualties in Ukraine surge
Rising number of men killed or missing in action makes a military breakthrough for Moscow less likely, officials say

Talk about burying the lede!

“Russia has captured less than 1.5 percent of Ukrainian territory since 2024. [It’s] also estimated that Russian forces suffered about 415,000 dead, wounded and missing last year in battles that were largely focused on the two cities.”

4. Sign-on bonuses for soldiers = about .5% of Russian GDP
5. Drones thought to account for 70-80% of casualties (tho this seems very high)
6. 90% of new recruits in 2025 simply replaced prior losses
7. Russian Army accepting high casualties to avoid equipment losses (i.e. tanks)

‘At least 325,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in the conflict, according to the CSIS report, five times greater than in all Russian and Soviet wars combined since the second world war and at a ratio of at least twice Ukraine’s battlefield casualties.’
