European Parliament moves toward a negotiation position on the proposal to apply the EU/US trade deal in EU law. Seems that a reference to the anti-coercion instrument has been dropped. Would still need to be negotiated with Member States.
Thanks to the EP negotiating team, we now have a large majority for a common EP position on the implementation of the EU–US deal.
It’s a strong and balanced package, fully reflecting the 5 “S” I originally put forward:

European Parliament moves toward a negotiation position on the proposal to apply the EU/US trade deal in EU law. Seems that a reference to the anti-coercion instrument has been dropped. Would still need to be negotiated with Member States.
The wierdness of the current European Parliament, however, means that on the same day a hardening of migration laws is adopted with the help of the far-right, a broad majority of the centre plus the Greens adopt a progressive climate law, against the far-right:

Next step in the EP saga on Mercosur - after the slim majority for referral to the ECJ (with the potential for a huge delay) now a broad majority for agriculture safety net.
This will likely play into the discussion about whether Commission & Council opt for provisional application.

Relieved that additional safety net for agriculture now in place. Next challenge: returning to (or starting?) a discussion based on facts. We should get it right by the time of our consent procedure. Letting this deal slip away would be a huge failure we cannot afford. #Mercosur

Finally, the other expectation also came true - despite flirting with the far-right on the issue, on the EU-US trade deal the 'von der Leyen' Platform found a deal, including new safeguards in case Trump raises tariffs or threatens another EU country.
We welcome the agreement reached today in the EP that fundamentally improves last year’s EU–US Turnberry tariff deal.

However, on the EU-US trade deal I am more sceptical this will happen. Will be hard for the likes of Bardella to oppose Mercosur and then be instrumental in pushing the EU-US trade deal through. But still noteworthy it is being floated as an option.

At the same time, as discussions on the EU-US trade deal are getting stuck on the question on whether and what kind of safeguards to include in case of another Trump aggression against the EU, another area is opening up where a centre-right to far-right majority could decide a major EU policy.
