Israeli main battle tank fires at UN blue helmets in southern Lebanon

UNIFIL, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, has said that Israeli soldiers fired from a Merkava main battle tank at members of the international mission on foot in territory occupied by Israeli forces. "The heavy machine-gun fire landed about five meters from the blue helmets, who had to take cover," UNIFIL said in a statement posted on X. The blue helmets asked the Israeli Armed Forces to cease fire through liaison channels. "They could leave the area safely about 30 minutes later, when the Merkava tank withdrew to the position of the Israeli Armed Forces" in Lebanese territory, the peacekeeping mission said. "Fortunately there were no injuries," said UNIFIL, which nevertheless denounces that this incident "constitutes a serious violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701." "We again call on the Israeli Armed Forces to cease any aggressive behavior and attacks on or near the peacekeeping forces working to support the return to stability that Israel and Lebanon say they want," it appealed. Later the Israeli armed forces confirmed they fired in southern Lebanon, but attributed them to confusion caused by bad weather. "Two suspects were identified in the Hammis area, in southern Lebanon. The soldiers fired to disperse them and they fled with no casualties," according to the Israeli army, which explained that after an investigation it was concluded that "the suspects were UN soldiers patrolling the area who were misidentified as suspects due to the bad weather conditions." "The Israel Defense Forces want to emphasize that no shots were fired at UNIFIL soldiers and that this matter is being handled through official military liaison channels. The IDF will continue to intervene to eliminate any threat to the State of Israel," the statement concludes. Subsequently the Lebanese Armed Forces denounced the "escalation" of Israeli attacks. "The Israeli enemy persists in violating Lebanese sovereignty, causing instability in Lebanon and hindering the deployment of the army in the south," he noted. "The latest of these condemnable attacks was against a patrol of UNIFIL in Lebanon," he denounces, while claiming that it is working with "friendly countries" to "end these violations and incursions by the Israeli enemy" and its dangerous escalation. On Friday FINUL itself denounced that Israeli forces have erected a wall in T that prevents the Lebanese population from accessing a zone of about 4,000 square meters near Yarun, within Lebanese territory, and urged the Israeli authorities to withdraw from all positions north of the Blue Line. Israel has launched dozens of bombardments against Lebanon despite the ceasefire, arguing that it acts against Hezbollah activities and that, therefore, it does not violate the ceasefire, although Beirut and the group have criticized these actions, which were also condemned by the United Nations. The ceasefire, reached after months of fighting linked to the attacks of October 7, 2023, envisaged that both Israel and Hezbollah would withdraw their forces from southern Lebanon. However, the Israeli army has maintained five posts in Lebanese territory, something also criticized by Lebanese authorities and the group, who demand an end to this deployment.
