However Mordred is kiiiind of Kay’s poor little meow meow. And also they should kiss. When they’re not snarling at each other, they team up against everyone else and it’s a 10/10 dynamic.

Mordred is a nightmare for Mordred reasons. They teamed up bc they’re the only people who can stand each other long enough to run the errand they’re trying to complete, but they both have ulterior motives (Kay to seek help from witches). “Can stand each other” is doing a loooooot of heavy lifting:

I cannot stress enough how much Mordred has Blorbo of All Time energy in Idylls of the Queen. He spends half the book hoping someone will kill him, and the other half displaying Severe Mommy Issues. He’s the Watson to Kay’s Holmes. He is always carving little snakes and/or serving cunt. This bit:

i read idylls of the queen yesterday and deeply enjoyed it
Highlight: Page 38 “God damn you to Hell, Mordred!" "Very likely." It was his standard response whenever I, or anyone else, damned him. "Indeed, I have had it on the authority of a saint that my damnation is a fact already recorded wherever they record such matters. So you see, when I speak of Her Grace as a small heap of ashes, I have good reason to sympathize with that same small heap of ashes." Highlight: Page 39 Mordred and I could get along more companionably with each other, most of the time, than most other men could get along with either of us.

What’s weird is there is a corner of our yard where we put the compost—and it doesn’t have anything growing like this except for weeds.

i love how tolkien talks about beauty in age, how frodo looking older adds to his beauty. Obviously “he’s like that and sometimes it shines through. I love him whether or no” is like one of the top tier most romantic lines in all of fiction but the part that comes before is so incredibly lovely
and stronger. Frodo's face was peaceful, the marks of fear and care had left it; but it looked old, old and beautiful, as if the chiselling of the shaping years was now revealed in many fine lines that had before been hidden, though the identity of the face was not changed. Not that Sam Gamgee put it that way to himself. He shook his head, as if finding words useless, and murmured: 'I love him. He's like that, and sometimes it shines through, somehow. But I love him, whether or no.'

I always forget until I’m doing a reread that Aragorn is actually extremely charming because he’s always like “guess you’re stuck with me 😔” and he really does think that going with him is the less fun/cool thing to do even though the hobbits are always like “omg strider ❤️ yay strider”

showing up a day late with finale 2-year anniversary thoughts. I know I have people following me who liked the ending, and I hope you can forgive this one lapse into bitter disappointment, but this is all I could see:

We often see them at the end of a story, maybe in a "ten years later" epilogue. They speak in a soft, serene voice. They have Accepted what they cannot change. They have let go of a lot, including most of what we see them actually care about in the story itself. They are Happy, At Peace, in some non-descript way. They bare little resemble to the person we were actually shown. They bare little resemblance to any person. We were shown, as we usually are in stories, an agent, a desirer, someone becoming. Now they have Become. And they look back on all that silly becoming as something childish that they have moved past. Fire, you know, fire is for children who don't know any better.
