Once the U.S. forced the shift, Israel “suddenly” found the remains in an area it already controlled - suggesting delay by design, and not chance. ▪️That account has been reinforced by senior Hamas leader Mousa Abu Marzouk, who said Hamas provided Israel the location of the remains more than a month ago through mediators, but Israel deliberately delayed acting. “By the way, the information we gave them about the body was from a month ago - they’ve had this information and President Trump talked about it - yet they didn’t go to these locations behind the yellow line to look for the body, just to drag out the first phase as long as possible,” he told Al Jazeera. ▪️The spokesperson for Saraya al-Quds previously made the same claim, as did Israeli outlet Israel Hayom, which reported that Israeli officials knew the location and postponed the search. Israel consistently used the failure of Hamas to return these remains as a pretext to reject discussion of the second phase of the Trump initiative. To a lesser extent Israel also used the missing remains of its last captive, buried somewhere under more than 60 million tons of rubble in the Gaza Strip, as a pretext for its refusal to meet any of its commitments stipulated in the 8 October 2025 Israel-Hamas Sharm al-Shaikh Agreement. Israeli policy to continue indefinitely with the first phase of the Trump initiative was eventually overruled by the US, which announced the imminent commencement of the its second phase. This decision, I believe, was in significant part taken so that Trump could seize center stage at the annual Davos conclave of the very rich and thoroughly objectionable after Carney’s landmark speech, that the US-led world order is no longer and had always been an illusion, generated too many headlines for the uber-narcissist’s liking. Then, Abracadabra, the missing remains suddenly materialize. Not because Hamas located them and handed them over to Israel, but because the Israelis miraculously found them within in an area of the Gaza Strip that remains under direct Israeli military control. In other words, the remains had been there all along. Either Israel had until that moment been unaware of their location, and found them at the very last moment through a stroke of extraordinary good fortune, or it had long known where to find these remains, but chose not to retrieve them in order to use their absence as a pretext to indefinitely prolong the first phase of the plan. Take your pick.

A few days after that, Israel killed another first cousin of mine named Noor al-Shantaf, along with her husband and their three children. Only one child survived.

In my own extended family, Israel killed my first cousin Tahrir and her husband and their five children (ages 17-6).
That was in October 2023.
In that strike, a second cousin named Mohammad Khader Abu Toha and his wife and their five children were killed (ages 18-2).

In a recent interview with The Economist, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the ongoing aid blockade, refusing to explain why minimum levels of food, medicine, fuel, shelter aid, and reconstruction, explicitly required under the ceasefire, remain blocked. Pressed on mass displacement and the widespread devastation, Netanyahu said the civilian suffering would only end after Gaza is fully disarmed. The recent death toll includes at least seven children who froze to death from cold exposure, and at least 25 others killed in building collapses and shelter failures as winter conditions worsened and Israel and the U.S. continued to block mobile homes.
