Trying to decide if I like this iOS 26 on my iPhone 13. Some of it makes sense to me. Performance seems fine. But for some weird reason, I keep getting mental images of Windows Vista 😀
Visually, some aspects feel a little “busy” to me. Maybe glass look can be disabled?

Another week writing code for STM32H7. Starting to work out when to turn the AI off and back on - for very generic, repetitive or boilerplate code it can sometimes save a lot of typing. For obscure APIs or bespoke algorithms, I turn it off as I find it unhelpful and sometimes worryingly wrong.

I’ve heard it suggested that governments around the world should contribute to strategic FOSS projects (some of the which underpins the technology we use everyday). Makes sense to me and could help better democratise the technology we increasingly rely on.

Loving the desktop experience of Linux Mint @linuxmint.bsky.social
Virtual desktops, hot corners, and general aesthetic is much kinder on the eye than the stock Ubuntu. Some stability issues with my Nvidia p620 (power mode related?) but I’m thinking of changing to AMD anyway.

Just had to reinstall NextCloud AIO (my Pi 5 threw a wobble after an update and refused to boot) - the restore from backup was so seamless. Back online much quicker than I expected, and a real sense of confidence that my backups are recoverable.

Does anyone know much telemetry is sent by Windows 11 and what data is shared and how it’s used? I hear about this quite a lot but I assumed it was all performance related stuff. I’d be a bit more upset if it was profiling me for marketing purposes, but I doubt it.

Final thought for the day. The claim that AI tools can improve coding productivity will need hard evidence. However, it’s all too easy to be reductive and quote summary stats. I suggest the context and detail will be critical, but so often, these are the very things some do not want to hear.

I’ve been observing with interest the suggestions of a “certain AI tool” while writing code for a STM32 microcontroller. What strikes me is my own human bias to “notice” when it’s seemingly amazing, while ignoring/discarding the many times it’s not (I’m being diplomatic here)

I’m very fond of the episode of “The IT Crowd” where a group of people were shown “The Internet in a box”, and they lapped it up. Is this to some extent an albeit amusing allegory for what’s happening with AI right now? Do we expect a “correction” at some point (not just in financial markets)?

Very taken with Linux Mint @linuxmint.bsky.social

Cinnamon is so snappy as well as aesthetic. My refurb Dell Optiplex feels like new. What surprised me most is how much faster my dev tools (ST Cube IDE) feel compared to Windows 11. Not sure why, but it’s a marked difference.

@nextcloud.bsky.social has been running on my pi5 for several months without issue. Just discovered the memories app for NextCloud. Could this be the way to finally escape my ever rising photo hosting costs? Indexing seems slow, but once done, it looks great.

Wow - the switch 2 is pushing £400 - unless they bring out a cheaper model, the Switch 1 could be our last ever console.
I don’t care for a portable high spec screen (presumably expensive), especially when there is a perfectly good tv screen in my living room.

@joplinapp.bsky.social I really like the encryption feature for Joplin notes. Is there a way I can use my YubiKey instead however?

In early 2020, a pandemic was spreading. The UK’s PM went on a 10 day half-term holiday during which he was uncontactable and the government went into panic mode, focusing, as Hancock related to the COVID enquiry, on buying enough body bags. 1/8

As we look to a new year, this can be a useful reminder of our human tendency to ruminate. Learn, adapt, adopt new habits, but rumination never solved anything.

Happy new year everyone. You’re all great, in some way. Each one of you has a weirdness - a superpower if you want to see it that way - that no-one else has. There’s no perfect, archetypal human. A species is the sum of its parts. And yet, as just one human, you are: special.

I was exited with the @raspberrypi.com 500 and the new foldaway monitor. Then I calmed down 😀. No MVMe, no front facing camera. I guess what I had in mind was the ergonomics of the iMac. One cable, pick it up in one hand.

Someone has done a mod of course:

This is fascinating. Why research has been blocked all these years makes my head spin. Quasi-morality? This is about minimising suffering by accountable and scrutinised study. Surely that is moral.
