The GOP already needed to ruthlessly gerrymander, suppress mail in balloting, purge voter roles, implement new poll taxes, dubiously challenge ballot authenticity, and flat out ask for voter fraud just to be competitive. Without their bag of tricks they would already be a permanent minority party.
