Nearly 20 years ago, a member of the Twitter film photo community was a hearing specialist and gifted me a pair of Surefire EP4 hearing defenders. With cleaning careful storage, I've worn them for every music gig I've photographed and most ultralight flights. You've saved my hearing.

"Pat, why do you carry that ridiculous 600mm lens on long hikes?"

Buddy, I can see mountains reflected in the eyes of a trailside pika.

I just got this Watchdives WD16500 a clomage of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. M126500LN-0001. It's uncanny valley close; I only see the differences to the Rolex rather than appreciating it for what it is; a decent quartz chronograph that's comfortable and good looking.

The Militado ML16 is inspired by the Sinn UX SDR but isn't a clone. It's smaller, more practical, comfortable. Also the crown is in a different position and it has guards, and there's a difference in lettering colours. And it only costs $120.

Rolex are so good at their game that you can only appreciate what ten grand gets you when you try this San Martin SN0017 ($250). A slightly better clasp, a slightly better movement (but same beat rate and calibrated and tested in 6 positions). Microscopically better finishing and all the trademarks.

This Berny AM439M-GRN is a false compressor, meaning the timing bezel rotates internally with a locking knob. This makes for a watch that can be dressed up on a steel strap, but is still functional as a dive watch.

It wasn't expensive either at $111, plus another $8 for shipping.

This Orient Mako III "Kamasu" is what I'd call a working man's tool watch. $430 new, I paid $65 for this used example.

The washed out red anodising goes well with my Autumn wardrobe and it's a full-spec day-date automatic diver by a respected Japanese brand.

Watchdives have outdone themselves with this Explorer clomage. It's a touch lighter than I remember of the original but pretty much everything about this is perfect.

I urge caution as it's made me badly desire the Rolex. If you have better self-control than I, buy this instead (it cost me $109).

This IWC Ingineur clone cost me $84.95 shipped. It's a great design, compact and elegant with an integrated strap. I skipped the steel strap and the balance is still good, but the replacement is silicone, which is a dust magnet. The olive waffle dial looks sharp. Excellent.

Caution massive cold snap on the way in Hong Kong.

That's 10 degrees Celcius colder than it is now in the middle of the night.

Today, I was chatting in a group of pilots and an old guys says to a chap in his early 30s. "You better get a backup career, because one day flying is going to get taken from you and maybe not when you expect."

So true.
