With a smooth sweeping quartz, this is a prime candidate for hydromodding. Which is when you fill your watch with low viscosity 3M Fluorinert perfluorocarbon and it becomes immune to depth, like Ed Harris in The Abyss.

The Militado ML16 is inspired by the Sinn UX SDR but isn't a clone. It's smaller, more practical, comfortable. Also the crown is in a different position and it has guards, and there's a difference in lettering colours. And it only costs $120.

Rolex are so good at their game that you can only appreciate what ten grand gets you when you try this San Martin SN0017 ($250). A slightly better clasp, a slightly better movement (but same beat rate and calibrated and tested in 6 positions). Microscopically better finishing and all the trademarks.

This Berny AM439M-GRN is a false compressor, meaning the timing bezel rotates internally with a locking knob. This makes for a watch that can be dressed up on a steel strap, but is still functional as a dive watch.

It wasn't expensive either at $111, plus another $8 for shipping.

This Orient Mako III "Kamasu" is what I'd call a working man's tool watch. $430 new, I paid $65 for this used example.

The washed out red anodising goes well with my Autumn wardrobe and it's a full-spec day-date automatic diver by a respected Japanese brand.

Watchdives have outdone themselves with this Explorer clomage. It's a touch lighter than I remember of the original but pretty much everything about this is perfect.

I urge caution as it's made me badly desire the Rolex. If you have better self-control than I, buy this instead (it cost me $109).

This IWC Ingineur clone cost me $84.95 shipped. It's a great design, compact and elegant with an integrated strap. I skipped the steel strap and the balance is still good, but the replacement is silicone, which is a dust magnet. The olive waffle dial looks sharp. Excellent.

Now I have a watch pressure tester. Ho Ho Ho 🎄

eBay came through! It's almost like you can buy anything on there.

I'm reminded of the geodetic lattice structure of the Vickers Wellington bomber fuselage.

Paraphernalia.

A kiseru is a Japanese smoking pipe, traditionally used for smoking kizami, finely shredded tobacco.

The tabako-bon is the lacquered tray. hi-ire, is the embers pot. The ashtray is hai-otoshi or hai-fuki. The pouch is kaichu-tabako Ire.

Black Sesame Roll dessert. Colloquially in Cantonese it's called film, because it looks like... Uh maybe 120?

My wife gave me crabs.

Just kidding. It's my cousin's 16610. Last date Submariner with an aluminum bezel. It has that cool old folded steel clasp but solid links.

Listen to the difference in the bezel sounds between the two watches.

My watch caught HPV and now it's grown a wart.

Beautiful chaos.

I was going to buy one of these for a Ghostbusters Halloween costume, but we were away in Japan on the night. 200W pulsed fiber babyyyy!

Last one! This Vacheron Constantin Overseas looked bigger in our inventory photo but it turned out to be comically small.

That's a shame, because our reserve was only $900 and online research pegged it at 5x that. It probably won't even make reserve because ladies want a bigger watch these days.

This Rolex GMT Master II ref.116713 is a lot like the sub, but super flashy and the bezel action goes nub nub instead of click click. It's worth more though, at around $12,800 second hand.

I can't carry it off. Tom Cruise's character in Tropic Thunder probably could, but that was a Panerai PAM 63.

This Rolex no-date submariner ref. 124060 *isn't* hideous and that's why it's on my wrist now.

Don't tell the wife I paid the company $7,700 for it. Expect to 50% pay more second hand if you aren't in the trade.

The slimness makes it super comfortable but not as soft and lovely as the Datejust.

This Ducati-inspired Tudor Fastrider Black Shield Ref. M42000CR-0002 in steel and ceramic is a technical marvel and absolutely hideous. Expect to pay $3,200 in the second hand market if you disagree with me.

Rolex's Cellini line offer some small and interesting hallmarked 18K gold cases. I'm guessing this is early 70s and would sell for about $4,800, but leave these to the collectors.

This Patek Philippe Calatrava is maligned as the entry level model, but it's quietly classy, for the confident gentleman. In good condition it's worth about $11,000 second hand but from experience the cost of service is steep, so do your research or get it checked out first.

It's hard to appreciate this 41mm Rolex Datejust II ref.116334 from pictures.

I always thought of it as an old man's watch. But in hand and on the wrist it's PERFECTION.

It's the most comfortable watch ever, like a smooth pebble that somehow hugs the wrist.

Expect to pay a little under $10,000.
