Historical newspapers are probably the archival material most used by the general public—for genealogy, local history—it’s such a loss

One way of thinking about what's going on now is that the bosses have collectively realized that the social contract they previously agreed to was much more generous to the rest of us than it needed to be. (What are we going to do? riot? strike?) So they are renegotiating it.
