With wildfires encircling Los Angeles and rendering houses to ashes and A-list celebrities into climate change refugees, I figured it was time to write another lament about the ever-escalating climate crisis.

🧵on the perils of having a rescue dog

We've had Marlo for 9 years, never a problem...until last night. He had been abandoned, possibly due to being gun-shy, and showed some clear signs of being mistreated (cowering, flinching etc and barking at strangers in the early days). 1/3

Possibly the most cowardly paragraph I've ever read in the Guardian, or any newspaper for that matter. Utterly shameful.

Far-right parties lead governments in Hungary, Italy and Slovakia - and soon to be Austria. They're part of (or propping up) coalitions in Croatia, Finland, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

It's entirely credible, if not probable, now that they'll take power in France and even Germany . . .

The most depressing thing is that not one of the constituent parts of this incoming coalition made much of an attempt to hide exactly what they are, or even pretend they can actually improve the country.
And approximately half the electorate is just fine with that. Grim.
It's hard to look at this Crony Coalition being formed in Ireland and feel anything but dread - out go the Green Party (good riddance) to be replaced by a hotch-potch of conspiracy theorists and gombeens who will do nothing but damage on housing, climate change or health.

I don't think you need ten-dimensional chess to explain why rich American CEOs whose infinite growth machines have stalled might be on friendly terms with the rich American CEO president who promises to stop antitrust, buy their crypto, and negotiate with foreign markets on their behalf.

Somewhere in a dark corner of the IMF's headquarters there's an economist with a PHD in Syrian hydrocarbon resources who's about to get a big promotion
So Syria's new government has announced that it will move away from a state controlled economy to a "free market" model in order to "attract foreign investment."

It's about to become an Islamic state of Amazon, Google, Walmart, Instagram, Apple, and BlackRock.

Yeah, Syria is truly "free."

Some positives of the election results so far:
1. No outright FG/FF majority, which was a possibility when election was called
2. FG/FF vote share still in decline
3. Greens punished for betrayal of their voters
4. The Monk upsetting lots of people I don't like

If Donegal lose Pringle and return two FF's, 100% Redress Party will have achieved precisely nothing in terms of increasing the chances of a proper scheme, despite their seat.
And Pringle was a great representative, hopefully he can still squeek in
That is bloody tough. I have sympathy for those impacted by mica, but their campaigners previously got into bed with the shittiest of right-wing racist scumbags. This is not good for Donegal, and not good overall.

FF&FG's economic model is Corporate Tax Haven Ireland, which they now fear is under threat.
We have a unique opportunity now to shift away from this, and actually invest in systematic measures to improve people's lives.

This AI stuff is starting to look like a speculative bubble spiralling out of control, with more and more dumb ideas sucking up a pile of capital, just like the .com bubble in 2000

Good.
Why? Who is this meant to be good for? Nobody wants your shit AI books, never mind 8,000 in a year. Just a terrible idea and a horrible road the publishing industry is heading down.
