ryan is right. people HATE hearing this. but it is just a matter of simple incentives. if you want a more representative legislature — and if you want a legislature more resistant to corruption — then you need to jack up the salaries. serving as mayor of NYC should net you a cool 500K *at least*
people hate hearing this but it's 100% true, creating a huge pay gap between political leaders, their staffs, and other elites is a recipe for corruption. of course the flip side of that is taxes on the rich should be jacked way the hell up
The Mayor of New York only makes $260k. I bet there are police that make more than that in NY with overtime.

We need to pay elected leaders more money and stop pretending it's some sort of calling. They're managing hundreds of billions of dollars in investments and millions of people's lives.

If you ride Prospect more seriously, finish by 8:30 AM. Especially on the weekends.

These Tour de France cos play dentists drive me nuts and give all bikers a bad name.
It really sucks that bikers have made the inner loop of Prospect Park unsafe for little children to cross. If I were a pro-bike urbanist I'd start trying to police the carbon fiber guys because anyone who goes to the park with kids probably hates your guts.

I worked in eviction defense during the last recession, an experience that was both formative and devastating. Among other things, I witnessed first hand just how many people are a couple missed paychecks away from homelessness.

J.P. Morgan economist sees 40% US recession chance and risks to 'exorbitant privilege'
There is about a 40% chance of a U.S. recession this year and a risk of lasting damage to the country's standing as an investment destination if the administration undermines trust in U.S. governance, according to J.P. Morgan's chief economist.

Right now we need to figure out how to turn the tide. But once momentum starts shifting—and it will—there needs to be a lot of energy put toward full accountability.

Too often that is swept aside in the interest of “moving forward.” And the accountability net needs to be very broad.

A Marketplace episode about the political influence/spending of the unfathomably rich. The estimate of the money spent is staggering, but it’s a lowball—it doesn’t count the way billionaires have molded/controlled the information ecosystem and mass media.

How good is yogurt for hardwood floors? Yogurt is full fat and the floors are oak.

This is remarkable and important but biking is also a beautiful experience.

If only we could make it a little less existential in NYC.

Cycling is ten times more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities
Active travel can help tackle the climate crisis earlier than electric vehicles – even if you swap the car for a bike for just one trip a day.

This could also be true in NYC, but alas.
READ: “3,337 Parisians were equipped with GPS trackers to record their journeys…for journeys from the outskirts of Paris to the center, the number of cyclists now far exceeds the number of motorists, a huge change from just 5 years ago.”

Evidence of leadership.
