It’s really neat how similar the mouths are on these two wildly different animals. Camel spiders and shrews both feed on arthropods and other small prey, so this basic shape must serve that purpose well!

Palaeocampa, unlike its unarmoured aysheaiid relatives, was protected by thousands of tall sclerite bristles, with a thorny, crenellated tip. In many fossils, the sclerites have a discoloured halo of fluid emerging from the tip - we investigated this with a technique called FTIR.

This #paleoart shows 3 views of the Devonian brachiopod fossil Paraspirifer bownockeri; one is reconstructed w/ some epifauna and boreholes. These are fun to find; they're an impressive size (for brachiopods). I had an excellent specimen to use as a reference for this painting.

I made this comic a few months ago, in collaboration with an expert named Tommy Tucker. I can't believe that it's immediately out of date because it refers to the Gulf of Mexico.
A whale swimming in a beautiful blue ocean with shafts of light. The text says, This is one of the rarest whales in the world. It's American, but most Americans have never heard of it. A whale swimming to the surface. The text says, Rice's Whales live only in the Gulf of Mexico. They were identified as a species in 2021. Arrows point to the pointy fin, three ridges on the head, and a length that's a little longer than a school bus. A whale making calls that look like swirly lines and little frogs. The text says, They make unique sounds, including a frog-like grunt and a sweeping, descending moan. These calls have echoed through the gulf for millions of years. An image of 50 whale tails, and a whale resting at the surface. The text says: Today, there are fewer than 100 Rice's whales left - maybe only 50. Oil spills, noise from industry, and shipping traffic make things tough, especially since these whales sleep close to the surface at night. With Asteroid 2024 YR4 starting to make news, impacts come to mind. Here is my impression of the space rock that passed above the Russian city of Chelyabinsk on February 15 2013, shattering windows for miles. This digital portrayal shows an overview just before the terminal explosion.
On February 15 2013 a space rock nearly 20 meters wide entered the atmosphere near the industrial Russian city of Chelyabinsk. It exploded into a careening fireball leaving a dense smoke trail which rose up in a vortex at the end of the path after the terminal burst. The shock wave hit the ground and rolled across the city below, shattering innumerable windows which injured about 1500 people and damaged 7200 buildings, most notably a factory building whose wide roof was caved in. This digital painting of an overview of this event used a 3D render of a map I prepared of the region as a 'template' to paint over in Photoshop. #SciArt
