As a national minority, the Cornish have a right to to be recognised for what we are: the UK’s fifth nation.
He says that if the Minister tries to impose a Devonwall Mayor, she may witness a repeat of the Cornish uprising of 1497, and calls for a Cornish Assembly and a Minister for Cornwall

North Cornwall MP Ben Maguire says national minority status creates a duty on public bodies to promote equality for the Cornish people, and to avoid “assimilationist” policies, with failure to do so potentially being challenged in court

He says Cornish national minority status is “legally binding”, and that the Devolution Bill in its current form prevents the Cornish from accessing the highest levels of devolution, as to do so would violate national minority status

Cornish MP Perran Moon stands up in Parliament and declares “I am Cornish, not English”

Reform are anti-Cornish assimilationists.

But let’s remember action from Labour’s leadership counts more than just warm words at the despatch box.

Will the Devolution bill specifically mention Cornwall? Will the government support Anna’s language bill? Will minority status be written into UK law?

Cornish MPs have called on Historic England to ensure that its Cornish sites reflect Cornwall’s national history and status.

They say Cornwall’s heritage is not “a subset of English history”.

Even better would be to call for all Cornish heritage sites to be run from Cornwall.

July 22, 2025 at 1:08 PM
Cornwall Council leader Leigh Frost calls for Cornwall to be officially recognised as the fifth nation of the UK, and for Cornwall to have a “stronger place in the union that we have contributed to for centuries”

In a letter to Devon council leaders seeking their proposals for reorganisation, the Government has warned them not to waste time and money on ideas that “do not sufficiently address local interests and identities”.

Angela Rayner says in the Commons that she recognises Cornish national minority status and the uniqueness of Cornwall, and that she wants to do devolution “with the people of Cornwall, not to them”

Leader of Devon County Council seems to suggest that Cornwall is being insular and parochial by not accepting a Devonwall Mayor.

The more Devon politicians make such comments, the more it proves how right we are to reject Devon control. They have no respect for Cornwall or our national status.

Of course unelected business leaders care about money, but it’s still disappointing to see such short-sightedness.

Cornwall-only devolution could lead in the future to permanent Wales-style funding and control.

With a Devonwall Mayor, we will have no voice and our cash will go to Devon.
January 14, 2025 at 12:02 PM
Yet again another Devon politician who thinks a recognised national minority should not have control over their own affairs, but should be governed by someone in Devon.

@lukepollard.bsky.social Why do you refuse to accept our rights as a national minority? How can you call yourself a democrat?

Nadelik Lowen to everyone in the nation of Cornwall and beyond! 🎄

Cornwall's right to devolution comes from our national minority status, but if anyone suggests Cornwall is too small, tell them to buy an atlas.

Other countries have areas of a similar size to Cornwall, with their own parliaments or assemblies and wide-ranging devolved powers.

It’s amazing how determined Devon politicians are to control Cornwall. They know we’re a national minority and we want our own devolution, so what’s behind it? Arrogance? Prejudice?

The end goal is mayors everywhere, and if we don’t agree, they would force us eventually. Since Devon is our only neighbour, the only option that fits their arbitrary requirements is a Devonwall Mayor.

This is an attack on Cornish identity and rights. We will not accept it.
December 16, 2024 at 6:57 PM
Ultimately there is no consideration of Cornish rights as a national minority, no flexibility to allow us a bespoke deal, just top-down diktat.

It’s undemocratic to force a national minority to be governed from elsewhere, to be unable to make our own decisions.

They’ve even given themselves the power to adjust the boundaries of local authorities - meaning they could decide that Saltash and Torpoint should be transferred to Plymouth City Council. After all, they’ve tried it before (Tamarside)
December 16, 2024 at 6:57 PM
This would then mean that other public services could be aligned to a Devonwall structure, marginalising the Cornish voice and inevitably meaning jobs and decision making powers are centralised in Devon
December 16, 2024 at 6:57 PM
I read the devolution white paper so you don’t have to.

It’s as bad as we feared. They WILL try to force a Devonwall Mayor on us - any suggestion that it’ll be our choice is disingenuous, when they plan to give themselves the power to force the creation of combined authorities.

Sickening to see Lib Dem MP @tessamunt.bsky.social and Wiltshire council leader Richard Clewer scoffing and sneering while Perran Moon talks about Cornish national status and our right to our own devolution.

Denying our national identity? Doesn’t Tessa know a Cornish Assembly is Lib Dem policy?
December 15, 2024 at 9:37 AM
There is no reason why Cornwall cannot have our own devolution.

We are a national minority and we have the same rights as Wales and Scotland.

We won’t be run from Devon, and we won’t be bullied into accepting any arrangement that denies our national status.
