While defending the luddite argument in Discord, I stumbled into this IMO succinct explanation for opposing generative AI:

At every step in the process, it impoverishes us.

The reason generative AI is so popular with wannabe creatives is best illustrated by something every pro writer has encountered: getting pitched an idea by someone saying "You write it and we'll split the profits!" because they think the idea is what has value, not the writing. The opposite is true.

I’m gonna say this a little more loudly: there is no “exception” for GenAI usage if you support artists, writers, musicians, the planet, poor communities polluted by the generators, etc. None. Your “silly little uses” are still exploiting everyone and fucking everything up. Full stop. Thread.

I see it. I have lived it. 83 years ago, the U.S. government turned upon a group of its own citizens and residents and sent them to internment camps without due process. I was there among them. American fascism is back. It is here. It is now.

All search engines are compromised. The quality of search returns has diminished significantly. There are less "raw" returns based on search terms. Instead, you get AI generated responses to AI generated questions _based_ on your search terms.

"Do your own research" is "virtually" impossible.

Zelda Williams (the daughter of the great Robin Williams) sure had a lot to say about the “Studio Ghibli style” AI images that have been trending recently.

I think those people should read these posts and really think about what they’re doing.

This morning's quick reminder: generative AI is a natural resource-guzzling plagiarism machine that exploits creatives to enrich tech bros.

Do not use it to create art or writing.

Do not conduct "fun" experiments with it to show us how awful it is.

There is no ethical use for AI.

Let it die.

Make no mistake,GenAi companies will try and dismantle all protections that creatives have over their work in the US too. They KNOW they cant win lawsuits because they broke the law. But they can try and change the laws.

Folks, prepare yourselves to fight this tooth and nail.

There are so many sources for free, eye-pleasing, not-environmentally-rapacious images. Creative Commons licenses, public domain art history.
