r.i.p. burger becky. she and her wife jannell jaquays, who died last year, were two of the trans women who built the games industry. is this all you have to look forward to as a trans elder in the games industry, a gofundme for medical care and a death in your 60s?

Becky Heineman was to video games what Wendy Carlos was to music. The revolutionary that didn't need to make headlines or rush to any spotlight, but a quiet unstoppable force that inspired the young world of electronic games to be wonderful in a way only she had the guts to do.

We already miss you

A mighty miracle worker behind some of my favorite CRPGs from ye olden days, titles that pushed the envelope in a lot of ways like Interplay's take on William Gibson's Neuromancer to being told to add a dragon to Dragon Wars a month before release when they couldn't call it Bard's Tale IV. Legend.

What a remarkable human, and what a remarkable thing to know that she passed bemused at reading her own eulogies.

Rest in peace, Rebecca. Thank you for everything.
I never thought I’d get this wish. Odd seeing eulogies before I expire

I'd like to share this old video of hers, where she talks about her time working on the 3DO port of Doom.
it's a wild story that stuck with me, and a reminder that sometimes "bad games" have amazing people working on them

in the early 2000s Rebecca took the time to chat over IRC with a teenaged and gender-confused Me on the practicalities of transition - in a time where being out as trans online was something that could get you socially ostracized. I owe her a lot for that and only hope I can pay it forward.

Rebecca Heineman is a goddamn legend among women. She did SO much great stuff, from her impossible game ports, to tirelessly keeping the mac gaming scene alive, to making sure that the Kinect works when you're wearing a skirt, to making the worst version of DOOM kinda glorious in its own way.

Rebecca Heineman's last message was for people to look up her departed partner, Jennell Jaquays.

Jaquays was so influent to tabletop RPGs that "Jaquaysing" became a verb for designing complex, non-linear dungeons.

@nickoten.bsky.social wrote a great article on her:
