My name is Matthew Graber, and I am a PhD student in Atmospheric Science at UIUC studying climate change and tornado prediction. I received my Bachelors with Honors from Purdue in May 2022, and I finished my Masters from UIUC in May 2024. I love sports and being outside.
Glad to be on here on bsky
I remember the first time I learned about the “spin” and “splat” terms in a class in undergrad, I thought it was a joke. Was I the only one?

Things I have learned in the progressional world, especially under an administration that does not care for what you do…
Things don’t go your way a lot more often than they do. And often it doesn’t seem fair. But you have to find ways to keep going when you get put down.

#Melissa unfortunately is still intensifying. A 9am EDT Tropical Cyclone Update indicates that winds are up to 180 mph, with an estimated minimum pressure of 896 mb.

You can see how GLM lightning has 📈 in the past hour, encircling the eye, with eye WV temp still increasing!

My home state of Indiana may give in to Trump’s pressure and redistrict giving Indiana a 9-0 GOP map, thus silencing 40% of the state. Which makes me very sad not just for the loss of voice in Indiana but also that it may lead to my family leaving the state after 30 years. The idea makes me very sad

First draft of my next paper, and likely Ch. 1 of my Ph.D. Dissertation, is complete. With my previous two papers, I have needed to work on my scientific writing and I hope that it is apparent that the skill is improving.

Sometimes I need to get out of own head when I think that every research project will get something groundbreaking. When in reality, many projects are just small steps towards a bigger goal, and some projects may even finish as: “I tried this, it didn’t work” and that’s still of value

Does anyone else feel like they get more work done when they have a lot going on? I feel like I get more research done during the semester than the summer, I feel like it should be the opposite

Congratulations to Garrett Statum, who I advised for his master's thesis, for passing his defense today!

My 2nd paper, consisting of the 2nd half of my MS Thesis, has been published in WCD. This was a long process with multiple rounds of revisions, and I am grateful it is now out. It covers warm-season weather regimes used in an empirical prediction framework. wcd.copernicus.org/articles/6/8...
Linking weather regimes to the variability of warm-season tornado activity over the United States
Abstract. The contiguous United States (CONUS) experiences considerable variability in tornado activity on seasonal timescales. The high impacts of tornadoes in the CONUS motivate the need to better u...

Looking back at last night, it looks like the wedge began to occlude right before it hit Plevna and turned north, avoiding a direct hit on the town. The same process that doomed Greensburg in 2007 may have saved the majority of Plevna last night. Heart is with those impacted

NWS meteorologists will do everything they can to uphold the NWS mission and save lives despite already being stretched so thin. The government needs to stop treating them as our enemies.

As a severe weather outbreak became increasingly likely Friday, meteorologists at the National Weather Service office in Jackson, Kentucky, made the decision to call everyone in and staff the overnight shift, according to Tom Fahy, who represents the NWS Employees Union.
Short staffing at NWS in Kentucky did not affect tornado warnings for deadly storms, union says | CNN
The Jackson, Kentucky, office is one of at least four such facilities across the country that is so short-staffed that it is no longer routinely operating 24/7.

Many aspects of today’s event have been strikingly similar to the May 4th, 2007 event. The Woodward OK tornado, the Kiowa county supercell and its characteristics. Thankfully, Greensburg appears to be spared from this tornado emergency. But in this environment, this supercell will keep going sadly

It looks like it has an anticyclonic couplet on its east side too, just like the 4 May 2007 Greensburg tornado did

Stay weather aware today! Southern Illinois and Indiana, and western Kentucky definitely under the risk for possibly significant tornadoes.
Around Champaign, still a smaller tornado risk but a definite large hail risk. With a lot of families around for graduation, stay safe!

🚨 Meteorologists are sounding the alarm: severe weather forecasts are already slipping due to staffing cuts at the National Weather Service. Lives are on the line.

📉 Forecast quality down
⏱️ Lead times shorter
⚠️ Systems stretched thin

Call Congress now—demand they fully restore NOAA.
Meteorologists say NWS cuts degraded forecasts during recent storms
The National Weather Service’s reduction in weather balloon launches meant forecasters had less data available when the central U.S. got hammered with hail and tornadoes.

The Midwest Regional Climate Center, based out of Purdue, has been restored! This is what happens when we step up!

The NOAA Midwest Regional Climate Center has been centered right on Purdue's campus since 1986. It is the latest victim of NOAA funding cuts.
This one hurts on a personal level, and it stems from my love for Purdue.
