Reading All The Way, and the impending implosion of Maxine's life is giving me so much anxiety that I have to put the book down every multiple times per chapter. The slow suspense and gut wrenching fear really is getting to me.

Ultimately most people just conflate comfort while speeding with a skill that conveys safety, and experience any suggestion that speeding is inherently dangerous as an attack on personal accomplishment. And that’s what makes speeding so dangerous

Really hope Microsoft's shift to vibe coding isn't hitting Excel. I don't want to think about the downstream effects of Excel breaking, even for a short period of time.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

$75m (2017) -> $180m (2021) -> $444m (2025)

All those cost estimate increases and still no direct transfer from the elevated station to the subway station. But we've got curved escalators ig
The CTA State/Lake elevated station will close next month for demolition and construction of a new station that could take at least three years to complete.

i don't get the love for waymo in certain urbanist circles. it's safer cars, at least it seems that way from available data, but it's more cars. more cars are bad! we should want less cars!

Remember this? The most amazing thing about this remarkable 2002 car commercial is that it didn’t seem to realize at the time, or perhaps didn’t care, how effectively it made the point that cars and car infrastructure are a HUGE waste of space in cities. Award-winning 2002 ad for Saturn car company.

I'm sitting through a law firm's risk management session and the fact that the GenAI section isn't just a slide with the text "Don't use it" is the Apollo dodgeball of a partner getting sanctioned for GenAI slop next year.

Ah! Well. Nevertheless,
Guys, the President has the authority to classify and declassify documents at will.

He’s just going to classify all documents that mention him and/or other Republicans.

Anyone seriously saying "we should build more social/public housing in the US instead of market rate housing" should have the text of the Faircloth Amendment stapled to their forehead.
Public housing has been capped since Oct 1, 1999, and municipalities can only build more by removing old stock.

Probably the funniest inclusion in SB2111 is the Transit to Trails Grant Program, as it specifically allows for grants to projects providing transit access to hunting areas.

It's illegal to carry or transport firearms on public transit vehicles in the state of Illinois.

It would be interesting to see what kind of leverage in tax policy the City of Chicago could use to try and decrease congestion. For instance, offering an exemption to the personal property lease transaction tax for companies that have >50% WFH participation, measured in hours.
“Congestion is a fact of life in thriving regions. This year’s numbers challenge us to think differently about travel. Why are people on the road? Can we shift some of that demand, or give travelers more reliable options?” www.traffictechnologytoday.com/news/congest...

150 parking spaces and 400 indoor bike spaces for 397 apartments isn't a bad mix, but we should really have fewer parking spaces and more bike parking in such a walkable neighborhood.
Developers are pitching plans for a 29-story residential high-rise with 400 apartments on a vacant Fulton Market lot. blockclubchi.co/4neqKug
