I did not know that Sony literally put in their licensing agreement with Marvel for Spider-Man that Peter Parker had to be “heterosexual, Caucasian, and raised in Queens.”
Marvel needed to deliver a version of Spider-Man that was different from what audiences had seen before. (But not too different: Sony and Marvel had a seventy-one-page license agreement detailing which aspects of Spider-Man comics Sony could use and listing Spider-Man’s powers from “Super-Human Jumping Ability” to “Super-Human Adherence.” According to the license agreement, Spider-Man could not torture, smoke tobacco, or have sex before the age of sixteen; Peter Parker had to be heterosexual, Caucasian, and raised in Queens.)
