The World Championships of Inline Speed Skating were this month. Speed skating includes a discipline that it, perhaps surprisingly, one of the most electric in all of sport: the elimination race. Linked below are both a great example race and the world championship event from last week.

Tomorrow, August 31st, is the final day of the World Championship of Badminton. The finals for men's and women's singles and doubles -- as well as for mixed doubles -- will be contested starting at roughly 10AM Eastern Time.

Of the four apparatus disciplines within rhythmic gymnastics, the ribbon is often the most challenging for spectators. Venues often shut off air condition during ribbon segments to prevent any unwanted motion. During the 2023 World Championships, the venue reached temperatures of 95°F/35°C.

Elements in a rhythmic gymnastics routine range from the barely perceptible to the borderline absurd. Here, a gymnast performs a handstand leg throw to fling three hoops along three different arcs into the arms of her teammates.

[1/2] Although men compete in lower divisions and at some national championships, the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships are contested exclusively by women. Rhythmic gymnastics is also the only officially all-woman sport in the Olympics.

Rhythmic Gymnastics is a performance sport where timed, musical routines are scored by judges. Its disciplines are Hoop, Ball, Clubs, Ribbon (all single-athlete), as well as 5X and 3X + 2Y. The apparatuses used in group events are determined by individual event organizers.

[1/2]The most dominant athlete in canoe sprint right now is probably Czechia's Martin Fuska. The 32-year-old is the world record holder in canoe singles at both 500m and 1000m; is a 3 time world champion (2 at 500m, 1 at 1000m),

At the Canoe Sprint World Championships, athletes compete for medals in distances ranging from 200 meters (which takes 30 to 40 seconds) to 5000 meters (which takes 20-25 minutes). Every distance is contested in both canoe and kayak events.

From @theathletic.com: An Italian athlete has died after being found unconscious mid-orienteering race. Mattia Debertolis, 29, had been competing in the men’s middle distance race at The World Games in Chengdu, China.

This might be the only sport with penalties for blacking out.

The Canoe World Championship is a series of flatwater "drag races" that is split between canoe events and kayak events. Canoe races have single-paddled oars and athletes who row from a kneeling position. Kayak races use oars with paddles on each end, and its athlete row while seated.
