I’m all the way out in Bali Indonesia (for work!) and it’s brilliant to see the Five Ways to Wellbeing in fishing safety - what an amazing legacy this public mental health messaging has had since its inception in 2008

Together with practitioners and researchers we’ve made some recommendations for the next steps. We’ll be building on these over the next few months and in the Global Safety Evidence Centre funding call closing on 17th September

Wearables are really growing for safety and the research hasn’t kept up which is surprising especially as some risks have been identified.

Collaborative Robots - Cobots - are also growing in use. Most studies focus on practicality of adoption and business impact with little on safety yet

Algorithmic Management and Emotional AI are more mixed in terms of impact on safe work. Some initial evidence that better design and collaboration can help reduce safety risks

Smartphone Apps look to be useful for safety, physical & mental health and overall wellbeing in some sectors but mixed for performance & absences.

AR/VR looking promising for training especially

As new innovations emerge learning about their safety and effectiveness needs to grow too. There’s some great learning already happening on smartphone apps and Augmented and Virtual Reality for safety.

Algorithmic Management, Emotional AI, wearables, Cobots needs more 👀

Digital and other technologies can be used to improve safety at work and helpfully also to help us understand what works better too.

Tech innovations are mostly introduced to improve other outcomes and can have new implications for safe work that need to be identified, understood & managed.

Early warning of disasters vary widely around the world.

There is a lot of learning that makes it far easier and cheaper to do the right thing - especially when that’s not the obvious thing - and without having the deep misery experience of disaster to prompt or to learn from.

Early warning for disaster happens in some places more than others. There is a lot of knowledge out there about ‘what works’ and we should use it

Loved seeing our ‘new’ office this week and to now work in a very modern heritage building in the heart of the City of London. The story of repeated very rapid technological & industry change is built in to it and gives huge hope for the current transitions we’re living through now.

There was a concerted effort to improve life satisfaction and reduce misery in the UK from 2011-2019 and it worked. A lot of this was *economic* & community
1) life satisfaction from 1973-2025 (euro barometer)
2) misery reduction 2012-2019
3) high flourishing 2013-2019
4) life satisfaction 2012-19
