Recently spotted on Ilford High Road – the F. W. Woolworth ‘ghost sign’ still in place beneath the new Superdrug store signage being installed this week.

Woolworths opened in Ilford in 1912. In 1938, the exterior was renovated in the attractive white Art Deco style that still stands today.

By July 1960, Woolworth’s officially desegregated its Greensboro lunch counter. The sit-ins had sparked a national movement. Inspired by these four students, people across the US began challenging segregation in their own cities.
During a 1980s celebration of the anniversary of the Greensboro Four and the sit-in movement, the head table leads the audience in the singing of “We Shall Overcome.” Image sourced from Greensboro, North Carolina.
