No sudden rupture is now required for the far right to take power in this country. For what we're seeing is a steady normalisation of extremists by the Conservative and Labour Parties, BBC, Telegraph, Mail and others. A shift once considered unthinkable beings to look acceptable, even inevitable.🧵

A little-considered factor in contemporary british politics is that if the far-right win then the labour front bench can fuck off to some american consultancy firm but if the left win there's a good chance we prosecute them for collaboration with genocide. The incentive structure is pretty clear lol

One could speculate that one thing driving the global shift to the Right, is business leaders recognizing that any rational, democratic government is going to respond to climate in a way that significantly curtails their privileges.

Not to make everything about climate change, but this is the same dynamic that explains our underpowered response to soaring temperatures. There’s a deep belief that someone in authority will find a way to sort it.
wrote about this last year and sure I wasn't in any way the only one but imo people voting for populist politics in the 21st century *is* a sign that they do just have too much faith in institutions, as opposed to not enough - they want to have their little tantrum but assume things will just hold

Politicians will blithely make changes to the law in order to chase a headline and some marginal polling boost without a care in the world about the thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousand of lives they blight by doing so.

what is up with middle-class Green types and sortition? Fundamentally an anti-democracy stance. And these people insist that they're on the same side as me lol

The government of Israel is exterminating every man, woman and child in Gaza. And our governments, and most leaders of liberal institutions in "the West" - parties both left and right, the press, universities - are doing all they can to support this. This is the central political fact of our time.

Day after day - scores murdered by these war criminals.

Today a cafe bombed with over 30 dead mostly women and children.

Yet still Western media and governments rush to give them cover.

If thousands of us stand up and say "I support #PalestineAction", what is the government going to do? Lock us all up for "terrorism" offences?
This is where we show them how solidarity works.

Nah, we know. The feckless, perfidious liberal is a much discussed topic, as is the hypernormalization and impenetrability of their cultist worldview.

Lagia sent this vid from Santa Maria CAs strawberry fields: Workers are running back and forth to the truck. We are working piece rate & earn $2.25 per flat. The constant running puts us at risk of injury, but slowing down means not making enough to pay our bills. #WeFeedYou

Petty crime is at too low a level. Only one in twenty five passengers on the london undergound dodge fairs. Less than £1 billion is lost to shoplifting each year. These are pathetic figures, showing a disgusting level of respect for private property. We need more people to see the rich as the enemy.

As fossil fuel burning continues, no respite from record global temperatures: the WMO gives a 70% chance the 5-year average warming for 2025-29 will be more than 1.5C.

The consequences: more heatwaves, extreme rainfall events, intense droughts, ice melting and rising sea levels.
Global climate predictions show temperatures expected to remain at or near record levels in coming 5 years
