I have witnessed boarding scanners malfunction numerous times, resulting in folks being sent back to ticketing to get paper boarding passes, which of course resulted in both unpleasant tantrums and delayed flights.

You do that too? I thought I was the only dork doing that 😂. I’m too paranoid the digital one will somehow not show up when I go to retrieve it. Or my phone will decide to conk out right when I need it. I miss when we’d be mailed our tickets.
