So happy to announce our new preprint, “A geothermal amoeba sets a new upper temperature limit for eukaryotes.” We cultured a novel amoeba from Lassen Volcanic NP (CA, USA) that divides at 63°C (145°F) 🔥 - a new record for euk growth!

Parents share emotional look inside empty bedrooms of children killed in school shootings
Parents of children killed in school shootings often don't know what to do with the bedrooms left behind. Several shared an emotional look at the reminders of what they've lost.

This is Mac’s “ it’s Sunday so we’re going to get a pup cup, right?” Face.

We adopted him as an adult. I sometimes think his previous owners were Jedis because he often stares at you like he’s trying to perform the Jedi mind trick to get what he wants.

It worked this time. We got the pup cup.

I am so proud to see Jack's work out: bringing paleoichthyology into the world of ontological phylogenetics. This work comprises some of the most thorough comparative anatomy I've seen, and is a testament to Jack's dedication to transparent, replicable, and translatable science. Way to go Dr Stack!!

Had not seen this book before. Thanks to the Quarterly Review of Biology for putting it on my radar.

FYI, I was expecting a compilation of papers like in Foundations of Ecology. This is a summary of classic papers, does not include actual reprints, but still looking forward to reviewing selection.

In AIR-BORNE, I wrote about the reluctance many scientists had to acknowledge Covid can float to new hosts. Now it looks like something similar may be happening with bird flu, which may be blowing from farm to farm. Story in @propublica.org www.propublica.org/article/bird...
What the U.S. Government Is Dismissing That Could Seed a Bird Flu Pandemic
Egg producers suspect bird flu is traveling through the air. After a disastrous Midwestern outbreak early this year, we tested that theory and found that where the wind blew, the virus followed. Vacci...

Hi, it's me again

I have these calendars. They are so pretty. @megstampede.bsky.social made them. They have a bunch of animals on them, like crows and humpbacks and cuttlefish and salamanders.

Each month has facts about the animals AND actions you can take to help them
