The future depends on how big our “us” can become. Can we treat strangers as part of the human family? Can we work together across differences, not just fight? That’s the next step for humanity. And it won’t happen by accident — it has to be built.

Our biology can’t change fast enough to meet today’s challenges. But we can shape our world — our systems, schools, and culture — to bring out the best in people. We’ve done it before. It’s hard work, but that’s how humans grow and survive.

We often think kindness and humility are soft or weak. But they’re powerful. Without them, countries break apart. With them, we can solve big problems together. They’re tools we need — like bridges and clean water — to make any real progress.

Just like reading changed how our brains work, we now need new habits of mind. Less shouting, more listening. Less “us vs. them,” more shared thinking. Schools, media, and tech should teach curiosity and patience. That’s not dreamy — it’s survival planning.

Today, our survival depends on something new: caring beyond our group. Across race, country, religion, and politics. Not by ignoring human nature, but by growing it. Empathy and teamwork aren’t just nice ideas — they’re now essential to life on Earth.

We’re trying to solve global problems — like climate change, AI, and inequality — with brains built for village life. That’s a big part of why things feel stuck and confusing. Our emotions react to short-term fears, not long-term risks. And it holds us back.

Humans grew up in small groups where sticking together meant staying alive. Those old instincts still live in our brains. We divide people into “us” and “them,” fear change, and focus more on emotions than facts. But today’s problems are too big for that way of thinking.

Days like today can make it hard to write. I find that when the world wants me to curl into a ball and doomscroll, pouring that sadness, that rage, that raw contempt, onto the page itself not only helps, but sharpens my words and sometimes even makes them better. Don’t be afraid to write angry.
