Fact is that this nation has been a racist/sexist/fascist/oligarchy hell hole for the vast majority of its history. The progress made in my lifetime was culturally significant but an economic failure. We have been mollified while the obscenely wealthy boil us.

Make sure you use your library cards. Check out books by Black authors, indigenous authors, queer authors and other marginalized communities.

Also, ask your local library to buy more titles by marginalized folks. We often buy those requests.

Telling everyone to run for a board or office isn't helpful. Many of us wouldn't get voted in. People don't know us. You know what I'm running for right now? Keeping a roof over the heads of my two remaining children. Getting my degree. Because no one is going to vote a USC w/a GED onto a board.
