This is basically how cognitive dissonance works. Once a stubborn person makes up their mind about something, they're like a supertanker ship. Their momentum is so great that changing direction is very difficult. Put another way, their "'turning radius' is huge."

Trump very obviously wants to be The Boss, yet have everybody worship him. But, as we all know, the only bosses we also worship are the ones who 1) consistently make good decisions, and 2) also care about us.
