“Mostly” - I think if I picked a random person at, like, a no kings march there’s a decent chance they were mad at that whole episode but probably only remember it happened if reminded

I was as mad as anyone and I had forgotten a lot of the details until today

oh okay. I’m honestly so confused what is going on here, everyone is screaming at me and each other and I don’t even know why

The Senate Dems caused the vibes, I don’t think it’s our responsibility to save them from it

What I said was “yes it’s true the public has a short memory but people are still going to be mad even if they can’t mostly remember why”

Getting this angry at me for pointing out that in the Trump admin every month feels like a year and memories are consequently shorter is not reasonable.

I’m sorry but most people do in fact need to be reminded about the earlier episode even if they were furious. A lot has happened since then and the thing that has lasted is the general anger at Schumer et al. I doubt the details are still crystal clear for most

This is literally my point? People mostly don’t remember the details - I can’t tell you the ten who caved before without looking it up - but the anger persists despite that

But the point is that despite that the sense of betrayal is cumulative, even if you have to think about where it comes from. And directed at everyone, even if they weren’t the ones who surrendered

Pointing out that the previous shutdown cave has mostly slipped out of the discourse is not actually “condescending and dismissive,” it just actually doesn’t get talked about very much? I myself don’t talk about it very much despite having been livid at the time

what is your problem? I wasn’t defending them, I was saying people will probably forget a lot of the specifics but the anger will persist

The people mad today were equally mad six months ago when the same thing happened and then forgot it happened mostly. With that said I think the risk for Dems is that the rage persists in an inchoate way that can’t even really be cured, since no one remembers where it came from

Unfortunately Census categories around marriage aren't super consistent over time so it takes some work to make like-to-like comparisons, but as best as I can tell a person 25-34 is about 3 times as likely to live alone now

The other problem is the rapid increase in marriage age. In the 1970s the huge majority of people in their 20s lived with a spouse.

I'm struggling to find the exact figures I've seen but working back from old Census tables the share of people 25-34 living alone has increased from about 4% to about 12%

it's hard to find exact figures easily but the share of 25-34 year olds living alone has increased from about 4% in 1970 to about 12% today

It's fine that standards of living have increased so much that people feel like this is something they can expect, but it's a surefire way of instantly doubling your housing costs - or more - and using up twice as much housing in the process.
