Made pancakes from this recipe Edward Gorey sent to a friend in a letter. Turned out pretty great. Would recommend.
Recipe: [EG enclosed the pancake recipe with this letter.] David Eyre's Pancake 4 servings 1/2 c Flour 1/2 c Milk 2 Eggs 1 pn Nutmeg 4 tb Butter 2 tb Confectioners' sugar Juice of 1/2 lemon Preheat oven to 425 degrees. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, milk, eggs, and nutmeg. Beat lightly. Leave the batter a little lumpy. Melt butter in 12" skillet with heatproof handle. When very hot, pour in batter. Bake in oven 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Sprinkle with sugar and return briefly to the oven. Sprinkle with lemon juice, then serve with jelly, jam, or marmalade. It is presumably Craig Claiborne who advises that one serve this while listening to Benjamin Britten's Ceremony of Carols.
