Retired Navy, love nautical history, history in general, literature…and Snoopy!
@katzish.bsky.social I saw your mention on Twitter about the Moby Dick marathon in New Bedford, I hope to attend that one day; huge fan of the novel, Melville and nautical history. As a poet do you like Melville’s prose or verse?

As I begin 10 days of vacation I’m reminded of this great truth from Herman Melville.

‘Whoever is not in the possession of leisure can hardly be said to possess independence. They talk of the dignity of work. Bosh…..99 hundreths of all the work done in the world is either foolish..harmful..wicked.’

@avboccia.bsky.social Really enjoying this one, just finished reading about the Washington Naval Conference of 1922. So many strong personalities that served
at that meeting!

Happy 75th bday to the Peanuts!
Ronald Reagan was a big fan created by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz. President and Mrs. Reagan often exchanged Peanuts cards. Here's a book gifted from Schulz himself with a Snoopy drawing titled “Head Beagle” in honor of President Reagan.

@lukeepplin.bsky.social Forgive me if I’ve asked this before but I recall your wife is from the Hill country of TX and was curious if she recalls the Monarch butterflies going through the area this time every year. I understand Texas and especially around San Antonio is in the path they go to Mexico

@shipwreckspod.bsky.social I got your package today, thanks so much!! I did not have it, one of my favorite battlefields. Just started this massive one, over 500 pages! This is an old shipmate of mine from a few years back at Chickamauga/Chattanooga; thanks for the SeaDog sticker and bookmarks too!

@lukeepplin.bsky.social I wonder how many times Schulz used the one panel pier scene? To me it’s one of the most moving of his aspects as it brings into focus the simplicity of a boy and his dog.

I re-released the story of the SS Marine Electric, which sank in a 1983 storm. Tomorrow, a bonus episode drops featuring retired US Navy CPO Scott Baxter, who took part in the rescue aboard the USS Jack Williams.

A Labor Day thought from Herman Melville;
‘Whoever is not in the possession of leisure can hardly be said to possess independence. They talk of the dignity of work. Bosh. 99 hundreths of all the work done in the world is…foolish..harmful..wicked.’ As I get closer to retirement I can relate!

Was reading a fascinating article in National Geographic by a photographer whose father was a Soviet Azerbaijani lepidopterist and she was trying to find the rare butterfly that was named for him in the mountains of Armenia and Azerbaijan; if that’s not Quixotic nothing is!
