Anyone who says "This is what they voted for" in response to the tragedy unfolding in Texas is having a vile thought and needs to sit shamefully in a corner until they learn what solidarity is.

Not to do TOO much Mamdani discourse this morning, but one of the reasons American racial categories are what they are is the idea that "African" is a single, coherent, and consistent racial identity. That belief is downstream of slavery ideology, and has no real salience for actual reality.

They deemed this story newsworthy b/c the NYT & many of its elite white readers are still obsessed with race-conscious college admissions. Now after finally winning at SCOTUS anti-affirmative action folks can only attack it retroactively.

That’s why this seemed like a “story” worth risking it all.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

I am grieving the barbarism that is going to unfurl from all this. People are going to die. Livelihoods gone. All to feed a corrupt kleptocracy.

I see every day up close how different it is from the first time around. There are no guardrails. A disaster. I’m sorry we have to live through this.

This is why Democrats lose.
Just like literally everything else, Congress can pass a bill cancelling these cuts.
So what? The bill, as written, would require $500 billion in Medicare cuts. I may not run an "actual publication," but I do tell the truth.

If Customs and Border Protection takes your phone at an airport/border, they can run it through tech that analyzes your texts, pictures, and social connections.

Now, CBP says it wants to “expand” and modernize that tech:

To jump on this point, here are places that have implemented some of these radical ideas:
City-owned groceries: Erie, Kansas
Free buses: Akron, Ohio
Ban on noncompete agreements: North Dakota
Exactly! Mamdani's most "radical" proposals — free buses, government grocery stores, higher taxes on the wealthy, a huge increase in affordable housing — really aren't that radical.

The centrist meltdown has to be about something else.
on Mamdani's city-run groceries idea, "laboratories of democracy" are one of the great U.S. strengths - even if you don't think it's likely to work, it's really interesting to see it tested. Maybe it'll be really successful! Maybe it'll fail for reasons we don't expect!
