My review of CONCLAVE — or, more accurately, my review of Ralph Fienne’s forehead wrinkles.

boxd.it/8d8H4R
A ★★★★ review of Conclave (2024)
You wonder how many hours Ralph Fiennes spent staring in the mirror getting his forehead wrinkles right. The whole movie rests on those long, deep sickles that grant a texture of pain to everything he...

Is ANGEL DOWN horror? Maybe! Like WHALEFALL, I don’t know how to categorize it!

Like I said, I’m gonna try to post more process stuff. Here we go.

Before any book, I do months of research and compile all sorts of ancillary documents I refer to as I write. No skimping, no glossing over, no AI.

Here’s a language doc for a current project involving a trucker.

More process. I draw (crappy) figures of characters, often to track their physical quirks, wounds, dismemberments, etc!

Here’s a sketch tracking the tattoos & scars of Mitt from WHALEFALL.

I’ve timed anesthesia/other mind-altering procedures to writing passages intended to be hallucinatory. It works.
Colonoscopy is now behind me (and negative)! I'm not supposed to make any important decisions for the next 24 hours, so I guess I won't cut out any subplots or combine any characters today.

Seriously major publication op-ed bros. Look within. Jordan Neely was no less a human being than Brian Thompson. If one of these murders prompts you to wring your hands and the other makes you go “well it’s an imperfect system, ho-hum” you are a moral monster with zero scene cred
If you have more tears (=op-ed ink & column space) for the CEO than you have for the man murdered on the subway whose killer now walks free gtfo 1) my TL 2) Bluesky 3) Earth

i wonder if daniel kraus knows how tgirl coded jay gardiner is. like was this an intentional choice or pure coincidence. either way it's incredible i think a trans reading of whalefall is not only valid but actually adds to the themes

critical themes in whalefall & rotters
- corpses. decomposition. bodies. bones
- fathers and sons. the father teaching the son. the son becoming the father. the father protecting the son. the father and son destroying each other in a way nobody else can.
- death: the uniting force, what connects us
December 12, 2024 at 4:54 AM
whalefall and rotters are both just. boy learns the Old Trade from dad. hates dad. goes looking for bones. wants to die. survives. dies. resurrects. The World Is A Circle Of Death, Everything Eating Everything Else, And We One Day Will All Be Dust. revel in the miracle of living you motherfucker.

there's something so important to me about the endings of whalefall and rotters. there's something so important to me about the fact that they get happy endings

when I was 7 years old i got put in shakespeare camp and the director of the camp challenged us to find a mention of a dog in shakespeare's writing because he almost never wrote about dogs and I found a mention of a dog in Midsummer and got rewarded a bag of trader joes gummies. anyway old yeller
name a film with a dog in it.

I'm about to be SO insufferable
ANGEL DOWN. 7/29/25.

Death makes angels of us all & gives us wings where we had shoulders smooth as ravens claws." - Jim Morrison

A polyphonic tale of moral conflict. Five WWI grunts find a downed angel. Greed takes hold & their angelic encounter becomes a descent into hell.

its truly wild how many parallels exist between whalefall and rotters. daniel kraus has one niche and by GOD he knows how to use it
December 11, 2024 at 6:48 AM
how i look being convinced to read rotters
December 11, 2024 at 6:46 AM
its about mitt decaying the way lear did its about jay the favored child leaving his father forever and only reconciling on the very edge of death its about how jay killed mitt and mitt almost killed jay............................... jay "cordelia" gardiner nobody understands u like i do
whalefall is so king lear coded if you're unwell enough. can anyone hear me. it's so dark in here

really incredible how a book can make you feel something so powerfully that you're scared to keep reading it. anyways time to put rotters down for the night i think
December 11, 2024 at 6:40 AM
i think my favorite thing about whalefall and rotters is the prose. it's so poetic and gorgeous and it adds such a strong feeling to everything. tell me why i cried over a jellyfish. thats entirely unnecessary. i love it so much
