im on here for ONE reason and ONE reason only and its to talk about whalefall | they them | my header image is Sunrise over Ischia by Ivan Aivazovsky
Cheshire Crossing by Andy Weir comes to mind--who would expect the middle-aged-man-hard-science-fiction guy to write a fantasy graphic novel about three teenaged girls? Who would expect it to be *good?*

but whalefall doesn't do that it doesn't shy away from the scary upsetting parts because those are necessary!!! you can't have the good without showing where it came from!!

like most "it gets better" rhetoric has always felt kind of fake to me (and felt especially fake to miserable depressed passively suicidal me) because. HOW. we are always shown the results and not the journey which makes it seem impossible.

ive said this before but something that makes this book matter so much to me is the fact that things start off already bad and then they get so much worse but they do get better. they can get better.

oh you're telling me you were raised in your father's image and wanted nothing more than to get away from that? you're telling me you wanted nothing to do with the hypermasculine diving culture you were put into? you're telling me you've always preferred the company of women? ok

- critically: the ascent. the recovery. we have traversed hell and it is possible to emerge. you can never go back but you can go forward. it's possible to live after wanting to die. it's necessary. a message of survival.

- passive suicidality. Jay goes into the ocean searching for something and if what he finds is death he doesn't care. Joey stays with Boggs trying to find something and if Boggs kills him he doesn't care.
- A personal religion. Two-Fingered Jesus. the Carmelite Monastery. whales as angels.

- men that live in a world intolerable to them, in a world moving past them and leaving them behind
- the old world is dying. fathers try to keep it alive in their sons.
- sons in a world of men and not belonging in it
- apathy. sleeping all the time. we became oblivion.
