With Trump reportedly planning to end the IRS Direct File program, there's no better time to remember how TurboTax owner Intuit spent two decades fighting to prevent Americans from filing their taxes online for free.

(Published 2019)
Inside TurboTax’s 20-Year Fight to Stop Americans From Filing Their Taxes for Free
Using lobbying, the revolving door and “dark pattern” customer tricks, Intuit fended off the government’s attempts to make tax filing free and easy, and created its multi-billion-dollar franchise.

US educational system is an immense failure if some attention and memes gets you here.
And the old talking points aren't working anymore.

Anytime someone brings up the Uyghur people or Tiananmen or anything, American's are just like, "Gestures broadly to Palestine/War On Terror/Patriot Act/Climate Change/Oligarchs/Gerontocracy"

I'm sorry but the Dems are ridiculously bad at their Hegspeth questions. IMO, if you want to prove someone is incompetent, you ask them the hardest strategic questions they will have to know to succeed at the job

Worth reading
I just finished a new essay about the origins of wokeness. I'm going to get flak from both the far right and the far left about it, so to save all our time I'll respond in advance to what I know they'll say.

The right is extremely adept at confusing cancel culture with consequences culture or even just critique.
I've been saying for years now that the GOP considers any attempt to correct their lies as "censorship" and eventually it would lead to this.

More speech is now called censorship.

I've got you covered! In my latest @plos.org I buckle up for the waves of anti-vax muck likely to come in 2025. 1/2

You’ve definitely heard of the Costco DEI story by now, but it’s even more beautiful when you know the full background.

The shareholders put together a list of proposals to run by the board. Proposal 4 reads: “SHAREHOLDER PROPOSAL REQUESTING REPORT ON THE RISKS OF MAINTAINING DEI EFFORTS”

Even worse - the article only says that RFK's nomination "sparked controversy because of Kennedy’s history of challenging the safety of vaccines and linking vaccination to autism." No indication those claims are bogus! None! I'm embarrassed for @politico.com and everyone there.
This argument is absurd. Would putting a flat earther in charge of NASA lead to "illuminating discussions about physics and astronomy"?
