I didn't feel anything with "Hereditary" because whatever it had to say, it wanted so much to be considered smart for saying it. But "Good Boy" weighs heavy with many emotions, and the sense of loss runs deep throughout. Simple doesn't mean ordinary, and it's a lovely exploration of its themes 4/4

Whereas Ben Leonberg's film, with a much tighter budget, is actually trying to tell a story. It frames grief, suffering, love, and dread in a way that a dog could understand and the emotions and actions taken are often messy but everything is underlined with sincerity. And that makes it superior 3/

Ari Aster is so obsessed with his own cleverness that he thinks his simple ideas of a family curse are groundbreaking, and he focuses so much on highlighting his own intellect that it empties the movie of any meaningful emotion 2/
