Students and staff are the heart of the university comprised of education, research, and service; it should be led by the staff and students who make that happen. We reclaim the identity that management steals from us. We are the university.

"We now face a research and social landscape where the boundaries between rigorous academic work and mere opinion are increasingly blurred"

Why this matters: when expertise gets flattened into just another opinion, we all lose. Climate science = random blog post. Medical research = Facebook meme.

Arts, humanities, and social sciences are under attack. The National Govt, Judith Collins & Shane Reti, are cutting funding, claiming only "economic impact" matters, ignoring impact on housing, inequality, culture, and communities? After all, isn't improving human lives the point of it all anyway?

Cool to see so many influential voices chime up on this issue, including the @royalsocietynz.bsky.social themselves.
Pretty shameful for @judithcollinskc.bsky.social.

Shout out for making it clear this National policy is ideological.

And to think in 2017 they got behind a proposal for a road that was projected to cost "$327 million per kilometre..."

Well, we dodged a bullet *that* election. But now they're back.

With a Transport Minister wildly impervious to, what was their own term again? Oh yeah... "commonsense".

@aucklanduni.bsky.social VC Dawn has emailed staff, she proposes ANOTHER merger: Law-business-econ.

It's crappy for the arts-edu-everything faculty, and it'll be crap for them too!

We have 5 more years of this is cost-cutting-crap.

Am on strike this afternoon. Contract negotiations have been going on for ages and the employer has barely moved from their original (insulting) offer.

One of the key issues for me is the living wage. It’s mind-boggling to me that it’s 2024 and the university is still not a living wage employer.
One of the things we're striking for is a LIVING WAGE for everyone employed by the university. It should be shocking to everyone that a university is not a living wage employer. This seems like such an easy win for the university - why would you resist it?

Today UOA management choose if they commit to course cuts, or follow students, staff, and Senate's request to pause.
We join the staff picket outside the clocktower meeting at 4pm after justice for Palestine rally. This is a chance to show management we wont stand for them cutting our courses!

Great turnout of students and staff at today's strike.

Facing misallocated resources, and challenges to intellectual autonomy, staff rejected real-terms paycuts and the exploitation of staff receiving below living wage. We are the university united against management's fast-track attitude.

Universities rest on the shoulders of students and staff now offered a real-terms paycut by university management.

Students and staff reject the exploitation of our ranks. The TEU and PSA have called a strike to show you the importance of our labour.

Let it be clear. They may *hire* university students, but they are not the university and they do not care for this institution, or the people who work so hard at it, or the communities they serve.

We are the university, and we will not be bought by tobacco lobbyists.
The NZSIS threat report names foreign influence targeting academic institutions, concerningly limiting scope to state and state affiliated actors. There is increasing influence of private organisations in universities astroturfing their views to weaken the NZ state and university institution.
