Nature doggo says hello!

Tino loves the woods almost as much as me. So many good sniffs!

On the plus side: saw some beautiful elk on the airport itself. Glad there was no air traffic, we got such a nice view of them.

Bonus: leopard slug.

I didn't photograph my vomit, but it sure did look spectacular hah.

A Tale of Two Kimchis:
(Using Sandor Katz's method from Wild Fermentation)

Kimchi 1: Napa cabbage and scallions
Kimchi 2: Napa cabbage, scallions, and Swiss chard

This is day one!

Proof that I am a list-loving nerd (but also proof that I am getting over perfectionism and apparently can't spell scrambled):

My meal plan for our upcoming camping trip!

Apologies for the alt text: I used my phone to pull text from the photos but had a heck of a time editing it.

I had grand plans to take photos of the feast in all its glory, but forgot.

And so I present to you: the middle of the feast. 🤣

Valentino is a good cook's helper.

Look at him, hard at work helping me with my Ethiopian stews.

🤣

Injera, day one:

Teff flour, water.
Keep in a covered bowl til bubbly.
Stir often.

Should be ready in 1-2 days, depending on wild yeasts and temperature.

I present to you: my rustic wisteria basket. My first one ever, and I am pleased.

I intend to use it for carrying veggies from the garden to the kitchen. It is the perfect size and shape, and I made it entirely from yard waste.

For @cindyphanauthor.com:

Valentino. Surprise portrait edition!

Snuck up on him and caught him watching reality TV with hubby and roomie. 🤣

Went foraging for blackberries this morning, before the sun got too hot. I was having a nice time, listening to a podcast & filling my bucket. Then I looked up and saw this beauty!

She eats blackberries often in this area. She looked at me, I looked at her, and she went back to eating. So chill.

Went for a walk at dusk, on the hunt for hazel trees.

I am currently obsessed with wild hazelnuts.

I found *two* new hazels within stumbling distance of my house. I really have to be looking for them, because they blend into the red alders so easily, so finding them is exciting! Yay!

Teddy has been gone for a week.

We are all coping much better, but his absence is felt by all of us, all of the time.

Miss you, big boy. 💔

today was:

- grocery shopping with my hubby
- homemade pizzas on garlic naan with ricotta, swiss cheese, prosciutto, scallions, blackberries, and fresh basil (see photo)
- podcasts (@tpwky.bsky.social SSRI series and Tooth & Claw USS Indianapolis series)
- evening berry picking

Hubby and roomie are at a drag show in Vancouver today, so it's just me and tiny teeny Tino in our big house.

We plan on napping. After taking a bunch of boxes of stuff to the garage to be stored. And probably we will both eat some blackberries. It's gonna be a good day!

Current favourite way to use foraged berries:

Make compote: berries, a bit of maple syrup, splash of water, and a pinch of sea salt. Heat on med til hot, mash the berries a bit. Add a bit of spice if you like.

Put on waffles, pancakes, or crepes, along with butter and more maple syrup to taste.

Summer goal met: went berry picking with my husband.

Only for a bit due to the blazing heat, but it was lovely.

Now to wash and freeze!

I don't know what we would do without Valentino around right now. The house is so quiet without our giant borking Teddy, but Tino is still so adorably himself that we can't help but feel comforted. We are so sad but also so thankful.

Teddy died this afternoon, in my husband's lap. Peacefully.

We are so so sad.

Love you, big boy. You are such a good dog.

Oh, my heart.

His cancer is back. He does not have long.

We are shattered.

At the emergency vet with this big boy. Send good vibes, pls.

Also: $2300 estimate... so far. 😧 just what we needed!

Teddy, Portrait #002
July 28, 2025

He loves to sleep partly under the bed, which is hilarious because he is *huge* so he can only really get part of his head and tail under there.

(I'll be doing a bit of a series over the next however long I feel like doing this.. could be once, could be a thousand days in a row.. let's see how long the dopamine flows!)

Okay fine, I'll join in! Here's my lock screen. Heart added so y'all don't spam my hubby's phone number lol.

It's wild to me how many of y'all don't have any ICE info on your lock screen!

(ICE as in 'in case of emergency', not the other gross ICE.)
