I play tabletop games, stream on Twitch, and sometimes talk about important issues.
I have not stopped by yet. Everyone who can should stop by for me.

I think I am only at 90% it’s that. I think it’s a hijacking of how the human mind treats having kids. Given enough time you forgot the bad so you have more. Donald Trump is no longer in the White House and off Twitter and four years later people forget why they didn’t vote for him in 2020.

I suspect that is the point.

I would love to have a discussion with that woman. I am really interested to learn if her positions have changed or if she just doesn’t remember how bad he was. I suspect it’s the later.

It’s another one of those odd cases where Trump’s positions are just the positions of the last person he talked to on that topic.

Is he sucking in his stomach in that picture? The shirt is doing some really weird things around there.

Maybe I want the decision makers for the franchise to hear stories like mine so they can see how much Link meant to people and how much it hurts to see a change they consider inconsequential. I don't know but I expect in the movie Link to be a right handed boy, neither of which are Link.

I don't know what I want from telling this story. Maybe it is for people to think more about representation in small things that aren't the big ones we always think about. Maybe it is so people will stop and consider why I am personally boycotting my beloved franchise.

Every time there is hype for something related to Legend of Zelda I start bringing this up as much as I can. And most people I tell this to are right handed and have never considered it, and barely even notice which hand Link uses.

I can't even express how much Link's Awakening meant to me as a child, how it was one of a countable number of happy things from a bad childhood. And it was all because Link swung a sword with their left hand.

The only Zelda product I have not boycotted since 2017 is 2019's Link's Awakening HD on the Switch which I only got after I confirmed Link was still left handed in that game. The only representation I had growing up was taken away to "not confuse people."

Then I learn that Link is right handed in this game. And I am gutted. Then I hear the official reason by the Japanese creators is "The button to make Link do stuff is on the right side of the controller, we don't want to confuse people by making Link do something on the left side."

The next Legend of Zelda game I am aware of is 2017's Breath of the Wild. I am now 26 as the game gets close to release, and trying to reconnect with a hero from my childhood. Its not on Wii so no motion controls, Link can go back to being left handed. I am super excited for this game.

Then its 2011, I am 21 and what was up until then the low point in my feelings about Link. Skyward Sword is released. Again its on the Wii, again Link is right handed, but again motion controls. I'm not aware of the few DS games with a left handed Link during this period.

For 8 years I clung to Link like Link clings to the wreckage of the boat in the opening of Link's Awakening. Then its November 2006, I am 16 and Twilight Princess comes out for the Wii. And Link is right handed. Its disappointing but understandable I guess because motion control and all.

That is something I can not overstate ever. I went 8 years where almost never seeing another person have the same dominate hand, in real life or in media. I have an aunt, a cousin, and some more distant relatives who are also left handed, but that's it. Then I met Link.
November 18, 2025 at 3:33 AM
It doesn't matter why Link was left handed, what matters is an 8 year old boy saved up the money to buy a GameBoy color in 1998 and got Link's Awakening DX likely that Christmas. And that 8 year old boy got to see a hero swing a sword with the same hand that boy used for everything.

I get that Link was only left handed in North America because the first game ported over was a side scroller and due to Japanese side scrollers going right to left and NA side scrollers going left to right a simple x value swap was done and that accidently made Link left handed.

A left handed hero. As a white male, people who looked like me were always the default to the point where that didn't seem like representation. Especially because those white men on TV I saw or in games I played, as soon as they interacted with the world they used the wrong hand.

In 1998, I got my first GameBoy, a red GameBoy color. I don't remember if Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening was one of the games I got when I got my GameBoy color, or if I got it a bit later, but at some point I got that game. And all of a sudden here was a hero who was like me.

I was a child throughout the entire 90s, minus three months. It was a very rough childhood that I didn't have much respite from. No matter what I did or how I tried, I couldn't fit in. The most obvious way I didn't fit in was the fact that I am left handed.

I think those two channels should be studied as exemplar in YouTube. The folks at the Sojourn used to be the main folks at Spacedock. Then they split off and went to do their own thing, but were able to do it in such a way Spacedock is going as strong or stronger years later.
