Join us on May 13th from 8-10am for one of our American Dipper Surveys!

Did you know that these birds can actually swim under water? They have little nose flaps that close in the water, and tons of feathers for a bird their size, to protect from the chill and currents.

Neat untidiness: a long-untouched, unmanaged stream channel. With good “woody debris” aiding channel complexity. Features here include pools, riffles, bars. Cascading. Many microhabitats. Birds aplenty — kingfisher, grey wagtail, heron; willow warbler, numerous song thrush & wren.

How do you measure water when most lakes don’t have gauges? CU hydrologist Toby Minear is kayaking Colorado’s rivers to help validate NASA satellite data that could transform water management.

Colorado doesn’t know how much water it has. This CU scientist is kayaking to find out.
University of Colorado's Toby Minear captures river flow data with a NASA satellite he helped develop. Then he catches the current to check its work.
