1/6 🧬New paper at @cp-cellsystems.bsky.social led by @sashafanari.bsky.social! Does pseudouridine (Ψ) dynamically respond to cell state? We used nanopore DRS + Mod-p ID to map Ψ in neuron-like cells under “normal” and “perturbed” conditions (healthy differentiation and unhealthy Pb2+ poisoning).

6/6 🙌 Future work will determine whether static sites are critical for cellular function while plastic sites fine-tune gene expression in response to environmental stressors.
Huge thanks to the team for all their hard work! @wanunupore.bsky.social @genometdcc.bsky.social

Direct RNA sequencing of primary human T cells reveals the impact of immortalization on mRNA pseudouridine modifications.
Immortalized cell lines are commonly used as proxies for primary cells in human biology research. For example, Jurkat leukemic T cells fundamentally contributed to uncovering T cell signaling, activat...

Unbelievable news.

Pancreatic is one of the deadliest cancers.

New paper shows personalized mRNA vaccines can induce durable T cells that attack pancreatic cancer, with 75% of patients cancer free at three years—far, far better than standard of care.

This is the most relevant article to NIH and research cuts I’ve seen.

Imagine if this was today , how many people would be saying “Why are we studying Gila Monsters and their impact on diabetes ? That’s wasted money !”

How a Canadian scientist and a venomous lizard helped pave the way for Ozempic - National | Globalnews.ca
In 1984, Dr. Daniel Drucker, an endocrinologist from the University of Toronto, discovered a hormone that helped pave the way for popular diabetes drugs such as Ozempic.

The illegal cut of NIH indirect costs will mean at least $115M cut to University of Pittsburgh @fetterman.senate.gov @davemccormick.bsky.social. This means huge loss of middle and working class jobs and research trials for breakthrough treatments for residents of Pennsylvania, Ohio, & West Virginia
Helpful table to determine how much your University or health system is set to lose if the NIH indirect cap is suddenly lowered to 15%. For SJSU it is $374k which is on the smaller end but devastating considering our other budget issues. datawrapper.dwcdn.net/l0ZqA/8/
Estimated Single Year Loss of NIH Funding if 15% Indirect Cost Rate is Imposed
Based on analysis of 2024 NIH funding data. Sums are totals of losses in funding to programs if indirect costs had been capped at 15%

They tried this 💩 in the first admin, proposing cuts of indirects to 10%, and it was resisted by Congress

Call your congresspeople, and remind them they have defended health research before, and they can do so again

Since there has been a lot of misinformation circulating since last night, I find this AAMC infographic helpful in illustrating which types of expenses are and are not covered by NIH indirect cost reimbursements.
