An LLM "creates textual claims, and then predicts the citations that might be associated with similar text. Obviously, this practice violates all norms of scholarly citation.

At best, LLMs gesticulate toward the shoulders of giants."

Bender, West, and I contributed to this pro/con piece in PNAS.

If you're stressing out about tomorrow, there are now over 400 local immigration groups listed on this spreadsheet across all 50 states, DC and Puerto Rico - take a minute, find one near you, and commit to spending an hour volunteering with them.
To mark "Trump will declare a national emergency for mass deportations" day: here is the initial spreadsheet of our crowd-sourced *local* immigration advocacy/support organizations.

Please share widely, put to good use, and keep letting me know about more organizations folks can connect with.

A criticism like "you do not understand how LLMs work" is then seen as an argumentum ad hominem because they projected the tech on themselves; a bit like some religious people get when you say "there's no proof your prayers do anything".

Knowledge gaps: Think about all the casual learning that happens at dinner tables, from overheard conversations, radio, TV. Its hard for many deaf individuals to access this easily. Imagine missing it entirely without good language too, creating big gaps in understanding how society functions. 11/

Billy Joel’s song “We Didn’t Start the Fire” lists 119 historical events and people. The song says problems in the world didn’t begin with his generation. It’s about how history keeps repeating. Each reference shows moments or figures from the past.

Saw someone upbraiding someone else for having a hobby while the world is on fire, and, my friends:

1. The world is ever on fire, this is today's conflagration;

2. If you don't find time for rest and joy the fire will consume you;

3. Don't let people shame you for being an entire human.

Just to be helpful to people who don't know

Jail is different than prison

Jails are (mostly) county detention facilities and hold people pretrial, people incarcerated at trial, and people with sentences of one-year or less

Prisons are (mostly) state/federal facilities for sentences over one year

The Spanish words "tejer" ("to knit, to weave") and "taza" ("cup") are very distant cousins. Other Romance languages share this journey, such as French "tisser" ("to weave") and "tasse" ("cup"), but I'll focus on the Spanish for this discussion.
