Ha! My wife would likely disagree (but she doesn't like scary movies very much).

Agreed and good to know! The 2 horror movies I hold up as golden examples of how to make really scary movies are The Conjuring 1 & 2. For nonformulaic, I'd say The Hallow (one of my all-time favorites). The Thing is also great (as is the more recent prequel). Weapons was also a LOT of fun.

I had the same worry, haha. The recommendations I got were genuine, at least - some of my friends are very into horror movies. Hereditary in particular was "the scariest shit I've ever seen," according to one. It was not that for me :D

Pretty sure it's A24. They're kind of hit-or-miss for me. Some have been amazing, but some fall flat (Hereditary and Midsommar being 2 that were very popular that I just didn't like).

I've got Bring Her Back on my watchlist, so I'll bump it to the top! I think I've seen Talk to Me, but not positive. I'll go find a trailer.

The Australian horror that stands out most in my mind is Housebound, which was a ton of fun. I admittedly haven't watched a lot recently, though.

Sounds like both an agreeable challenge (language skills) and a great way to get off the beaten path and avoid some of the tourist traffic.

Thanks! I felt pretty good (some minor shin pain, so icing and a couple of days walking are in order). Glad you're taking it easy before that next one. And the Japan trip sounds like it'll be amazing again. Your photos from the last one were stunning. It's on my list to visit.
